Dr. Rodrigo Armijos, Associate Professor. Dr. Armijos provides technical scientific input in the planning of international conferences and programs such as the United States-Mexico Border Health Association Annual Meeting, United States-Mexico University Partnerships for Prosperity (TIES), Effective Swine Flu Prevention Methods, public service education/ information in Spanish (Mexico City Radio Network, 2009), the 2009 National Workshop on Colombian Refugees in Ecuador, Latin
American Congress of Parasitology (2011-2013). His community collaborators include the Sin
Fronteras Migrant Center and the El Paso Independent School District. Dr. Armijos is a member of the American Public Health Association and also maintains active memberships in orgnaizations including the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Global Initiative, Mexican Parasitology Society, Ecuadorian
Immunology Society, Iberoamerican Program of Sciences and Technology, and Ecuadorian Academy of Sciences. He currently serves as an executive committee member for the 2012 Latin American Congress of Parasitology and also is an ad hoc peer reviewer for international journals such as
Vaccines and the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
Dr. Sharon (Thompson) Davis, Associate Professor. Dr. Davis participates in the Office of the Provost Technology Focus Group, Frank and Polly Ann Morrow Scholarship Selection Committee and University Senate (Secretary to the Executive Council, Graduate Scholarship Committee, Emeritus Faculty Committee). At the local level Dr. Davis, contributes to local community organizations activities such as on the El Paso Board of Directors of the American Red Cross and American Lung Association, and is an Urban Area Strategic Initiative Sub-Committee Co-Chair, a Sierra Providence Health Network Bioethics committee member, Paso del Norte Health Foundation and UTEP-UTHSPH Hispanic Health Disparities Research Center grant reviewer, and the 2011 Abstract Committee Chair of the Society for Public Health Education/NACDD Midyear Scientific Meeting. She also a member of

and serves as the current President of the Paso del Norte Chapter of the Society for Health Education. Dr. Davis is the Faculty Advisor for Eta Sigma Gamma Health Education Honorary Society. She also serves as an ad hoc peer reviewer for health education and promotion journals such as the Californian Journal of Health Promotion, Health Education and Behavior, Health
Promotion Practice, International Journal of Health Promotion, Journal of Adolescent Health, and Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
Dr. Oralia Loza, Assistant Professor. Dr. Loza is actively involved in numerous activities in the community and elsewhere that support HIV prevention and treatment services, including for the LGBT community. She is a mentor/researcher for the UTEP Vulnerability Issues in Drug Abuse (VIDA) Program, a member of the Women's Resource Center Health Task Force, a Committee Member, for the Women's Resource Center Advisory Board. In addition, she is an active member of the CHS Community and Academic Partnerships for Health Science Research (CAPHSR). In addition, Dr. Loza is the Faculty Advisor, Graduate Students for Public Health and has directed a number of service activities with MPH students including Dining Out For Life International, International AIDS Empowerment (IAS), HIV Outreach and Condom Distribution. City of El Paso - Department of Public Health, Mpowerment Program, World AIDS Day, HIV testing and promotion in collaboration with community partners Aliviane, Inc., University Medical Center, Clinica La Fe and the M.A.C. Foundation.
Dr. Thenral Mangadu, Assistant Professor. Dr. Mangadu served as a scientific session reviewer for the 2011 National Resource Center FYE National Conference. She also is involved in student
success activities including Region 19 College Readiness Executive Committee and UTEP-El Paso Community College-Region 19 Independent School Districts, College Access and Student Success programs.
Dr. Joe Tomaka, Associate Professor. Dr. Tomaka has served as a reviewer for the National Science Foundation SBIR Phase I Proposal Review Board. He is a member of and serves on the Board of Directors of the Paso del Norte Chapter of the Society for Health Education. He also serves as a reviewer for the University of Texas at El Paso, Texas Tech University Health Science Center, and University Medical Center Institutional Review Boards. Dr. Tomaka’s community activities include membership on the YMCA Board of Directors and committee member in the Community Health Action Response Team, a CDC funded project to the YMCA as part of the CDC Healthy Communities
Program. Dr. Tomaka also currently serves as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed journals including Basic and Applied Social Psychology, Biological Psychology, International Journal
of Psychophysiology, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Motivation and Emotion, Stress and Health, Social Psychology and Personality Science, and the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.
Dr. MM (Meg Weigel), Professor and MPH Program Director/Graduate Advisor. Dr. Weigel is a collaborator with the Sin Fronteras Migrant Worker Center in El Paso where she works on issues of food security, nutrition, health, and occupational health. Other recent service activities include a 3- year term as a reviewer for the Fulbright Specialist Program, Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), work as an international editor for the Ecuadorian Journal of Pediatrics, and membership on university-wide and college committees including the Associate Deans’ Council, Provost’s Website Review Committee, CHS Faculty Recruitment, Retention and Evaluation
Committee. She has served as an ad hoc reviewer for peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of
Immigrant and Minority Health, American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, International Journal of Health Equity, Ecology of Food and Nutrition, Pan American Journal of Public Health, and Revista Ecuatoriana de Pediatria, among others. Her professional society memberships include the American

Dr. Maria Duarte-Gardea, Professor and Department Chair. Dr. Duarte is a task force member in the UTEP Leadership Development Institute, task force member in the Interdisciplinary Health
Sciences PhD Program, and Advisory Board for the Wellness program. Dr. Duarte has participated in numerous community health fairs, the Childhood Obesity in the Binational Paso Del Norte Region Summit, and the Healthy Eating Active Living Coalition. She was the College of Health Sciences organizer for the 2011 diabetes awareness campaign, “Go Blue on the Border.” Dr. Duarte also holds a statewide appointment by the Texas Governor on the Texas Diabetes Council. She was a Region 4 Summit Participant for the 2011 American Dietetic Association Future Connections-Summit on Dietetics Practice, Credentialing, and Education. She also has served as an Expert Workgroup Member in Gestational Diabetes for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and a Panel Reviewer for the NCMDH Special Emphasis Panel/Scientific Review Group and the NCMDH Building Research and Infrastructure Capacity (P20) Program. In addition, Dr. Duarte provides service to scientific journals as an ad hoc peer reviewer including the Journal of the American Dietetic Association and
Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.
Dr. Gabriel Ibarra-Mejia, F/T Lecturer. Dr. Ibarra-Mejia is a member of the Technical Advisory Group to the Pan American Health Organization Non-Communicable Diseases US-Mexico Border and an organizer of the bi-national annual conference in Human Security. Has served as member and chair for the College of Health Science Research Committee, and recently elected as a member of the Faculty Organization. He is an current reviewer for the Journal of Applied Statistics and the Human
Factors and Ergonomics Society, and serves and the Newsletter editor for the International Society of
Occupational Ergonomics and Safety.
Adriana Rascon, MPH Practicum Coordinator. Ms. Rascon is actively involved in a number of local community service activities. For example, she is a member of the Project VIDA, the Girls and
Women’s Health Advisory Committee on Obesity, Pregnancy, Diabetes Education, the City of El Paso’s Health Department Obesity Prevention Community Planning Coalition and participated in the 2008 media regional campaign to fight childhood obesity organized by Pan American Health
