We found similar uptake of statins among HIV infected women when indicated, as compared to HIV uninfected patients, in the Women’s Interagency HIV Study. The 2013 ACC/AHA treatment guidelines, when applied to a population of HIV infected women, nearly tripled the number of women indicated for statin treatment, in comparison to the 2001 ATP III guidelines. Statins were moderately effective in lowering LDL cholesterol in both HIV infected and uninfected groups. In line with previous research, the reduction in LDL among HIV infected women was less than among HIV uninfected women.
