Exterior Plants 02930 SECTION 02930 EXTERIOR PLANTS PART 1 – GENERAL 1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS:

A. Attention is directed to Bidding and Contract Requirements, and to General and Supplemental Conditions, hereby made a part of this Section.

1.02 DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

A. This Section Includes the following 1. Trees

2. Shrubs 3. Perennials 4. Deer Guard 5. Plant Mix

6. Shredded Cedar Mulch 7. Aluminum Edging 8. Warrantee

1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. The Contractor shall be licensed by the State of Michigan, Department of Agriculture Plant Industries Division to handle plant material.

B. The Contractor is required to submit a complete list of all subcontractors for approval by the Landscape Architect prior to the award of the Contract. 1.04 SUBMITTALS

A. Certificates of inspection as may be required by Federal, State and/or other authority shall be filed with the Landscape Architect.

B. Sample of shredded cedar mulch for Landscape Architect approval.

C. Product information shall be submitted for the following items: Deer Guard, Aluminum Edging and Tree Strapping.

1.05 PAYMENT

A. Payment for all plant material and associated work shall be at the unit prices listed in the contract for each tree, shrub or perennial plant installed.

B. Plant mix for the large planting beds shall be paid per the quantity of material installed per cubic yard. Plant mix required for deciduous trees

Exterior Plants 02930 planted outside these large beds shall be incidental to the installation of each tree planted.

C. Shredded Cedar Mulch for the large plantings beds shall be paid per the quantity of material installed per cubic yard. Mulch for individual tree plantings outside these large beds shall be incidental to the installation of each tree planted.

D. Aluminum Edging shall be paid per the quantity of material installed per lineal foot.

E. Deer guards shall be paid for separately under the pay item, “Deer Guard”. PART 2 – PRODUCTS

2.01 TOPSOIL AND PLANT MIX MATERIALS

A. TOPSOIL: Supplied topsoil, shall be fertile, friable and representative of local productive soil, capable of sustaining vigorous plant growth and screened free of clay lumps, subsoil, noxious weeds or other foreign matter such as stones greater than 1” in diameter in any dimension, roots, sticks and other extraneous materials: not frozen or muddy. pH of supplied soil to range between 5.0 and 7.5. Adjusted to not more than 7.0 by additives. Topsoil shall contain not less than 3% and not greater than 10% organic matter. Clay content as determined by Bouyoucous Hydrometer Test shall range between 5 and 15 percent. Mechanical analysis if tested shall meet the following requirements:

The Authority reserves the right to have supplied topsoil tested. Supplied topsoil shall meet the approval of the Landscape Architect.

B. PLANT MIX: Planting mix shall be prepared with four (4) parts of loam topsoil to one (1) part of granulated peat (by volume). Topsoil and peat shall be thoroughly mixed before placement and will be subject to the approval of the Landscape Architect. On site topsoil shall only be approved by the Landscape Architect for use in the Plant Mix if it conforms to these Specifications. Planting mix shall not be paid for separately but shall be incidental to the Contract.

Exterior Plants 02930 C. PEAT MOSS: Peat moss shall be sphagnum peat moss, natural, fibrous

and preprocessed; NOT MUCK. Peat moss shall be brown, low in wood content and free of mineral matter harmful to plant life. Peat moss shall have an acid reaction of 4 to 5 pH and have a water absorbing capacity of 110% to 200% by weight.

D. SOIL CONDITIONER:

1. In lieu of peat moss, and with the approval of the Landscape Architect, a composted soil conditioner may be used in the soil mix. This soil conditioner shall consist of well-composted organic matter such as leaves, grass clippings, straw, wood fiber or other suitable vegetation. 2. The composted material shall be fertile and friable with an acid reaction

of 5 to 7 pH. It shall be free of subsoil, heavy clay, stones, lumps, roots, sticks or other foreign material that may be harmful to plant life.

E. SOIL AMENDMENTS:

1. All plantings shall receive PLANT HEALTH CARE, INC. / MYCOR TREE SAVER INOCULANT or approved equal. Inoculant material shall be in 3 oz. Packs treating one inch of tree caliper per pack. Trees with 2.5-inch caliper require 2.5 packs. Install as per manufacturer specifications. Amendments shall be incidental to the plantings.

2.02 PLANT MATERIALS

A. QUALITY: Plants shall be typical of their species or variety. All plants shall be healthy, vigorous stock free from disease and with well-developed root systems. Trees will not be accepted if the balls of earth are broken or loosened. Only heavy clay loam balls will be accepted. No sand balls. All plants shall be nursery grown, inspected by the Bureau of Plant Industry and approved by the Landscape Architect prior to delivery to the job site. All plant material shall be freshly dug. Healed in plants will be accepted if they have been dug and healed in within the planting season. Cold storage plants will not be accepted. Park grade plants will not be accepted. B. MEASUREMENT: All plant materials called for shall be of minimum size

specified or larger. Trees, shrubs and other plants will be measured in units of caliper, height and spread called for in the Plans. The caliper, height and spread shall be average dimensions measured as specified in the current A.A.N. American Standard for Nursery Stock.

1. Deciduous trees and large shrubs will be measured in units of average height in feet or of average caliper in inches at a point six inches above the ground line. Where a clump is specified, it shall have a minimum of seven stems originating from a common base at the ground line. 2. Shrubs will be measured in unit of average height or spread as

Exterior Plants 02930 C. SUBSTITUTIONS: The bidder shall not qualify his bid because of an

inability to find a source of supply of the plant material specified. If, before planting time, the Contractor can show satisfactory evidence that material is not available, a substitution may be negotiated as follows:

1. The Contractor must receive written permission from the Landscape Architect for approved plant substitutions.

2. The Contractor must determine from the current catalog of Lake County Nursery, Prairie, Ohio the price of one plant as specified and the price of one plant to be substituted.

3. The price to be paid by the Contractor for furnishing, planting and guaranteeing the substituted item will be the same proportion to the bid price as the catalog price determined above. Note: A particular nursery catalog is stipulated only to set up a rigid procedure for negotiating unit prices on material that is different from that specified before the

opening of bids. D. INSPECTION:

1. The Contractor, upon request, shall submit the name and location of the supplier of all plant material to the Landscape Architect prior to delivery to the job site. The Landscape Architect reserves the right to inspect all plant material prior to delivery. Plant material shall be accompanied with certificates of inspection as may be required by Federal, State and/or other authority. Copies of these certificates must be filed with the Landscape Architect. Nursery stock shall be subject to examination and the approval of the Landscape Architect for its quality, dimensions, geometry and variety upon delivery to the site.

2. All plants shall arrive on site with labels indicating the full name of the plant. Plants shall be subject to inspection and rejection by the

Landscape Architect at the project site during the progress of the work for size, condition of ball, roots, limbs, foliage and geometry. Any material which, after approval, has for any reason become unfit for use shall not be incorporated into the work.

E. BALL AND BURLAP STOCK: All plants designated as "B & B" on the plant list shall have firm balls of soil sizes as set forth in the American Standard for Nursery Stock and shall be wrapped firmly with burlap or approved material; bound carefully with twine in a manner so as not to damage the bark, break branches or destroy natural shape; covered with moist soil, mulch or other protection from drying if not planted immediately. Nylon or plastic ball wrap and/or twine will not be permitted.

F. CONTAINER STOCK: Container grown plants designated as "potted" or container in the plant list shall have been grown in containers such as pots, cans, tubs, or boxes for at least one year and have sufficient root systems to hold together intact after removal without being root bound. Do not remove the container until ready for planting.

Exterior Plants 02930 A. DEER GUARD: Deer guards shall be Leonard Rigid Plastic Mesh Tree

Guards, 4-inch diameter, 48” height, color: Black or approved equal. Deer Guard Supplier: A.M. Leonard (800) 543-8955. Install with 3 zip ties at top, bottom and middle

B. TREE STRAPPING: Submit 18” length sample of the tree strapping to be used to stake trees. The use of plastic twine or electrical tape is not permitted.

C. STAKES: Stakes shall be made of wood or steel and shall be (3) feet long and approved by the Landscape Architect. Three stakes required per tree. 2.04 FERTILIZERS:

A. Fertilizer shall be Milorgonite. 2.05 MULCH AND MISCELLANEOUS

A. MULCH:

1. Mulch material shall be cedar shredded bark unless otherwise approved by the Landscape Architect. Mulch used for trees shall be incidental to the tree plantings.

2. Shredded bark shall consist of bark that has been stripped and shredded from saw logs by means of a debarking machine. Suitability shall be determined by the Landscape Architect prior to placement. 3. Mulch for shrub and perennial beds shall be paid for at the Contract

Unit Price for “Shredded Cedar Mulch”.

B. ANTI-TRANSPIRANTS: Anti-transpirants if required shall meet the approval of the Landscape Architect.

2.06 ALUMINUM EDGING: Aluminum edging shall be 1/8” thick, 4-inch high

Permaloc Aluminum Edging with Black Anodized finish or approved equal. Edge sections shall be 16’ length. Each section shall be staked with a minimum of 5 stakes.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.01 DIGGING AND HANDLING

A. DIGGING: All plants shall be dug to retain as many fibrous roots as

possible. Plants shall be dug just prior to moving unless otherwise specified. B. HANDLING: Plants shall be properly protected and handled during

transporting to insure optimum condition at the job site. Trunks and branches of all trees shall be carefully protected from injury of any kind during all operations of digging, loading and transporting. The Landscape Architect reserves the right to reject any plants that are injured or that do not otherwise meet specifications. The root balls shall be carefully protected

Exterior Plants 02930 with mulch, soil or other materials so that the plants shall arrive with their roots in a moist and healthy condition. The means employed shall be satisfactory to the Landscape Architect and shall be governed by weather conditions and the length of time roots may remain above ground.

3.02 GRADING BEDS

A. ROUGH GRADE: Rough grading of subsoil shall be accomplished to allow an even distribution of planting mix and/or mulches in shrub, ground cover and flower beds. All rocks, stumps, and other debris shall be removed from the bed. Subsoil shall be graded to remove all lumps, depressions, ridges or areas where water may collect.

B. FINE GRADE: Fine grading shall render planting mix and/or mulches to a consistent depth and with a smooth and level surface.

3.03 PLANTING

A. TIME OF PLANTING: Perform only during periods within the planting season when weather and soil conditions are suitable and in accordance with local accepted practice and as approved by the Landscape Architect. B. METROPARKS PARTICIPATION: The Metroparks will not participate in

the transporting of plants, digging of holes, providing equipment or vehicles or installation of plant material.

C. PLANS AND LAYOUT: Holes shall be dug in locations shown on the Plans or as staked by the Landscape Architect. The Contractor shall notify the Landscape Architect five (5) days prior to construction so that the work may be staked at the job site.

D. PLANTING HOLES: Turf and excess soil shall be removed from all holes and disposed of off site unless directed otherwise by the Landscape Architect. The holes shall be dug to a depth and cross-section of sufficient size to provide for not less than twelve (12) inches laterally beyond the root system for trees and six (6) inches laterally beyond the root system for shrubs and in accordance with the Details shown on the Plans. The holes shall be dug with sides vertical or as directed. Individual holes shall be dug for each plant and be of such size as to provide ample space for the entire root system as the plant comes from the nursery without crowding or bending the roots. Holes shall not be dug more than 24 hours prior to planting. In the case of special soil conditions or plant requirements, the dimension for holes shall be subject to reasonable variations. Augured holes are suggested.

E. PLANTING BEDS: Areas of shrubs and perennial shall be prepared by stripping as necessary and grading smooth subgrade just prior to planting. F. PLANTING MIX: The Contractor shall prepare such quantities of Planting

Exterior Plants 02930 practice of the American Association of Nurserymen and as directed by the Landscape Architect. Planting Mix shall be prepared with four (4) parts of loam topsoil to one (1) part of granulated peat (by volume). Topsoil and peat shall be thoroughly mixed before placement and will be subject to the

approval of the Landscape Architect. Planting Mix shall be placed to depths indicated on the Plans or as specified herein. On site topsoil shall only be approved by the Landscape Architect for use in the Plant Mix if it conforms to these Specifications. All granulated peat moss and topsoil shall be provided by the Contractor.

G. PLACEMENT: Set all plants at the proper level so that their depth, after settling, shall be the same depth as in their original location. Set the plants vertically and prepare to place fill flush with the ground line or as otherwise specified.

H. BACKFILLING OF PLANTING AREAS: Please note the required hole diameter shall be 12 inches wider on each side of the tree root ball. Planting holes and beds shall be backfilled with approved Planting Mix as specified. Backfill carefully to avoid breaking or bruising roots. Tamp backfill firm to fill all voids and to prevent settlement. When the hole is nearly full, water thoroughly and allow water to soak away. If settling occurs after watering add more backfill to bring fill to existing ground level.

I. SOIL AMENDMENTS: Cut burlap to allow root contact with soil mix / inoculant. Backfill soil in planting hole to within 4 inches of top of root ball and add Plant Health Care, Mycor Tree Saver or approved equal at the manufacturer’s rate per size of the tree caliper (2.5 inch – 2.5 packs). Evenly spread contents of packets onto the 12-inch wide soil mix ring around the outside edge of the root ball. Backfill remaining 4 inches of soil mix, thoroughly mix soil around the root ball with a shovel, compact and water.

J. EXCAVATED MATERIAL: Excavated earth from planting holes and beds shall be disposed of off site or as directed by the Landscape Architect. The suitability for use of this material for any portions of the work shall be determined by the Landscape Architect.

K. FERTILIZING: After placing backfill, prior to final watering, and before mulching, apply fertilizer to all plants at the following rates:

Shade Trees... 1/4 pounds per inch of caliper Small Trees..…... 1/4 pound per inch of caliper Shrubs...……... broadcast in bed

Perennial Beds... do not fertilize

L. WATERING: Thoroughly water all plants immediately after planting. This shall mean full and thorough saturation of the backfill in the holes and beds during the same day of planting. Apply water by open-end hose at low pressure to prevent air pockets and injury to the roots.

Exterior Plants 02930 3.04 DEER GUARD: Install deer guards with three zip ties: top, bottom and middle.

Deer guards required on all single stem deciduous trees small than 4” diameter. 3.05 STAKING AND GUYING: All material shall be planted plumb and guyed

immediately after planting in accordance with the Details on the Plans.

A. DECIDUOUS TREES: Deciduous trees shall be staked in a tripod method with ½” nylon tree strapping fastened to stakes that are three feet long (3 each). Strapping shall be tied above first branch of tree.

B. GENERAL: On all trees, stakes shall be driven into the ground to avoid the root ball and shall not be closer than twelve (12) inches to the trunk. Guy wire shall not be secured until the Contractor has been instructed to do so by the Landscape Architect. Tree straps shall not be tight but shall be left loose enough to allow limited movement of the tree as determined by the Landscape Architect.

3.06 MULCHING A. GENERAL:

1. After backfilling has been completed, approved cedar shredded bark mulch shall be placed over the entire tree planting area to a depth of four (4) inches.

2. Entire bed area of shrubs shall be mulched at three (3) inches as shown on the Plans. Perennial beds shall be mulched to a depth of two (2) inches or as directed by the Landscape Architect.

3.07 PRUNING: Pruning shall be performed after planting by a competent plantsman in accordance with recognized horticultural practices and as directed by the Landscape Architect. Plants shall be neatly pruned to preserve the natural character of the plants. Broken and badly bruised branches shall be removed in an approved manner to provide a clean cut.

3.08 MAINTENANCE: During construction, the Contractor shall properly care for all plants, performing such watering, weeding, cultivating, pruning, and other maintenance work as necessary to keep the material in a live and healthy condition throughout the life of the Contract. All equipment required for watering and maintenance shall be supplied by the Contractor.

3.09 CLEAN-UP: During the process of work all rubbish and litter resulting from such work shall be removed as directed by the Landscape Architect. Upon completion, all remaining rubbish and litter, together with unused materials and equipment used in or resulting from the work under the Contract, shall be removed from the
