I took this statement from him.

He says: Whoever desires to know the condition of the patient [at] the beginning of when he is ill, how long he will endure [it], let him look at the ascendent and the Moon and the lord of the ascendent and the lord of the Moon's house and the Moon's conjoining with a star, whatever it is, and the Moon's dodecatemorion. If the lord of the Moon and the lord of the ascendent are from among the benefics, or the benefics aspect the ascendent and the Moon and the Moon's dodecatemorion, or the Moon conjoins with the benefics, then, if the patient became ill at that hour and it is the beginning of his illness, it indicates recovery from his illness and his being healed of this illness quickly, if God wishes. But if Mars or Saturn happens to be in the situation of what I wrote, then it indicates that the illness will remain a long time in him. If the lord of this illness is Mars, then he got this illness from heat. From Saturn it indicates [that] the disease will remain a long time in its owner, and there has reached him from it consumption and coldness and swelling. If there is injury to the Moon from Saturn and Mars but they do not harm the ascendent, then it indicates that this illness will harm his body. If these two harm the ascendent but do not harm the Moon, then it indicates that it [the illness] will harm his soul and overwhelm his understanding and blind him, or [something] like this of disasters

because of which his soul will be ruined. If Saturn and Mars injure the ascendent and the benefics do not aspect these two, then the patient will die because of this illness of his, and grievance and pain will be in the limb which the sign in which the Moon or the ascendent is governs. If any of the malefics is in this sign or in [the sign] opposite it, then this pain and agony will be harsher in him.

If you want to know [whether] he will escape from this disease or not, then look concerning this from the aspect of the planets as it will teach this. If you want to know the condition of the patient, when it will be heavy and when it will be light, then the indicator of this is the Moon. When the Moon in its transit or its motion first reaches the malefics or they aspect it, then, as for the patient, [his] pain at this time will be the heaviest of what is [possible] and the most severe. Whenever the Moon reaches the place of the malefics and their aspect of it is in the term[s] of the malefics, then it indicates that the patient's condition is the worst of what is [possible] at that time. The patient is released as long as the Moon remains in a place and term away from death as, when it reaches the benefics or they aspect it, his pain is lightened and he is helped from agony. The Moon after seven days reaches its left quartile, and after nine days its left trine, and after fourteen days its opposition, and after eighteen days its right trine, and after twenty-one days its right quartile, and after twenty- eight days is when it attains its place in which it was. If the Moon reaches any of these places which I named on those days [that it reaches] them, then these are the days on which a judgment of the patient is best. Whenever the Moon on one of these days reaches one of those places and a malefic conjoins or aspects it, then the pain will be harsher in him and will be heavy. If the Moon on these days arrives in these places and the benefics aspect it or are with it, then it is lightened from the patient [and there is] much from which he is helped. I will name the days in which judgment is best. They are when the Moon has passed its place in which it was when there was the first beginning of the patient's illness by ten degrees or by forty degrees as those days on which the Moon in its motion reaches ten degrees and forty degrees are from among the days on which judgment is best. When the Moon in its motion reaches these two places and the benefics have stopped in this place or aspect it, it indicates that he will be released from his illness and recover from it, if God wishes. If the malefics are in this place when the Moon reaches it or aspect [it], then it indicates that [his] pain will increase and he will die from this illness of his. If the malefic which the Moon reaches is Mars and the beginning of this illness is by day, then it is worse for his pain and more hideous.

If the beginning of the illness is by night and the Moon reaches Saturn at this place, it indicates like this of the severity of the illness and its hideousness. If the beginning of this illness is at an hour in which the ascendent or the Moon is in a tropical sign, then it indicates that it will be easier with respect to this illness, or rather that he will recover from it, but sometimes he will also relapse. If the beginning of the illness is at an hour in which the two luminaries [are] under the earth, then it indicates that this illness is hideous, severe, but this situation alone does not indicate loss and death. It is necessary from this situation that you look at the aspect of the malefics and the two luminaries' reaching the benefics or the malefics as it is more suitable for your learning the condition of the patient and where his circumstances will wind up.

If on those days which were named the days of judgment the Moon reaches Saturn in one of these places, then the illness will increase because of fevers and chills and stretching and extension of the nerve[s]. If Mars is in this situation, it indicates that the patient's illness will increase and it will be harsher in him from a fever [which is] hot, strong, sharp, and this illness will be from excitement [and] heat, and sometimes he will pour forth blood, but it is not necessary that he tend to the outflowing of this blood and its pouring forth as sometimes he will benefit from it and the patient will be helped from his illness, it will make him comfortable.

If the patient [becomes] a patient and the beginning of his illness is when the Moon is increasing in its calculation and is with the Sun or with Mars in the same sign, then on the day that the Moon reaches its left quartile or its opposition loss and death are feared for the patient. But if the Moon is in its quartile or its opposition and is increasing in computation while Saturn aspects it, it indicates his recovery and his good health, if God wishes. If the Moon on that day is diminishing in its calculation and is with Saturn or [Saturn] aspects it, then it is in another than this situation and he will not benefit from Saturn's aspecting the Moon. If it is with the Sun and emerges from the Sun's position, then, as for him who becomes ill at that hour or whose illness has its beginning [then], when the Moon reaches that sign or [the sign] opposite the sign in which the Moon was while benefics aspect it or reach it, then it indicates his recovery with certainty on that day, if God wishes— He is exalted! If the Moon is in this situation and reaches malefics or they aspect it, then it indicates that his death and loss will certainly be on that day.

Look concerning the matter of the patient from these four cardines. The ascendent indicates the doctor, the midheaven indicates the patient, [the sign] opposite the ascendent indicates the cause of his illness, from what thing it is, and the cardine of

the fathers [the fourth] indicates his recovery and his medication, if God wishes. If the patient first becomes ill when the malefics are in the ascendent at that hour, then it indicates that he will not benefit from any of the doctor's drugs and his exertion and his treatment; this is because everything from the doctor becomes an injury. If the benefics are in the ascendent at that hour, then it indicates that he will benefit from the doctor and that he will be pleasant in this treatment. If a benefic is in the midheaven, then it indicates that this patient will be treated with a medicine from which he will benefit, if God—He is exalted!—wishes. If a benefic is in [the sign] opposite the ascendent, then it indicates that this patient will recover from the power of the drug which he drinks, but it will treat him not at all, and it will not be an illness for which he will be afraid, but its treatment will be easy. If you see a malefic in the ascendent and a benefic in opposition, then it indicates that, as for the doctor who begins to treat the illness, even if he is kind [and] learned, he will not benefit from his kindness and his treatment, but the reputation of this [man] and his praise will fall to another than this doctor.

If you want to know the condition of the patient and his death and he is one of those whose nativity is known, then look at the Moon, if it transits in its motion in the sign in which Saturn was in his nativity. If when he becomes ill Saturn also is with the Moon in its transit or aspects it, then this illness will be severe [and] one will fear for him from it. If the Moon in its transit is at that sign in which Mars was in his nativity, and Mars is with it or aspects it [at the beginning of his illness), then this patient will be [ill] from excitement [and] intense heat, [and] one will fear for him from it. If the Moon in its transit and its motion is in that sign in which Saturn and Mars were in his nativity, and one of them is with the Moon while the other aspects it, then it indicates that his illness will be harsher in him and will be heavy and one will fear for him from it. If the Moon in its transit is in that sign in which the malefics were in his nativity and reaches a benefic star in its motion when it reaches this sign in it or it [the benefic] aspects it [the Moon], then it indicates that this illness will last a long time in him and will be harsher upon him, but he will be released from it, if God wishes.

Every patient whose nativity is known is one who was born in seven months or in nine months [from conception]. Count for him from the day he was born till the day in which he became ill and the beginning of his illness occurred, then subtract from the total of this calculation, if his birth was for nine months, nine after nine, and for whom his birth was [in] seven months, seven after seven. If there is nothing [left] from the computation for him for whom you subtracted nine after nine or for whom you subtracted seven after seven, then it indicates that the days of this

patient are completed and his years are finished and he is dead. Because the years of the people of Egypt [contain] three hundred and sixty-five days, when you subtract from them seven after seven them is left one, [and when you subtract from them nine after nine there is left five]. Count for him whose nativity was for seven months one day for each year that has passed of his life till the day he became ill, l and if his nativity is for nine months [count] five days for each year that has passed of his life. Take what has passed of the days equal to the years, then add these together as it is easier for you than if they were all of the days in what has passed of the years. Then look in which sign are the place[s] of the Sun and the Moon in his nativity, and count the signs which are between the Sun and the Moon, and also [between] the sign[s] in which the Sun and the Moon am [nowt See how much this reaches, and keep its number. Then subtract the number of those signs which are between the Sun and the Moon from the days which have passed of his life till the day in which he became ill. If nothing is left of the number of these days, then it indicates that this illness is a severe illness or he does not hope to recover or be released from it.

If the Moon in its transit is in the sixth sign from the ascendent (this place is called the house of illness) or the Moon in its transits reaches the eighth sign from the ascendent or the sign which was the house of the fathers [the fourth] in his nativity or the sign in which the Moon was in the nativity, this native attains an illness; when the Moon is in one of these places, then it indicates that this illness is not negligible [and] easy, but is severe [and] hideous. If in this transit in these places the Moon aspects the benefics, then it indicates that this illness will leave him and he will escape from it, if God wishes. But if the malefics are aspecting it in this situation, then it indicates that one will fear for him from the illness. The illness is the worst of what is [possible] when the beginning of the illness is at an hour in which the Moon is in the sign in which the deadly star was in his base-nativity. The deadly star is that which at the start of the nativity was the first lord of the triplicity of the cardine of the fathers [the fourth), because the first lord of the triplicity of the house of the fathers indicates death and the second illnesses and sickness. Some of the lords of the triplicity are called "evil" [dushisah]. They are "evil" when the commencement is by day and the lords of the triplicity are diurnal star[s] and when the commencement is at night and the lords of the triplicity are nocturnal starts). If none of the lords of the triplicity of the house of the fathers is "evil", then it indicates illnesses and a chronic disease. This is the most hideous of what is [possible], that according to the transit of the stars the deadly star is with the Moon or aspects the Moon.

Concerning the matter of the illness consider how the positions of the Sun and the Moon are at the start of his nativity and when the beginning of his illness occurs. If you find the Moon has preceded the Sun to its left quartile from where its place was in his nativity or has reached the transit of the Sun at the beginning of his illness, then it indicates that this illness will leave him and he will soon recover from it. But if it does not reach the transit of the Sun before it reaches its left quartile, then this is an indicator that this illness will stay a long time in him and will not leave him except after misery and delay.
