Interview Schedule for Patient Participants
Getting to know the participant
The purpose of this section was to gain some basic demographic information about the participant and to develop rapport. The section began with a brief restatement of the aims and objectives of the study, confidentiality and anonymity, and a reminder that the participant was able to withdraw consent at any time.

How have you been spending your time here? W hat’s it been like fo r you on the ward? Safetv and Securitv
The aim of this section was to move the focus towards discussion of issues of safety, threat and security.
As you know the aim o f this study is to fin d out how it feels to be a patient on Shore ward specifically with regard to feelings o f safety. In what ways does the unit feel safe or not so safe fo r you ?
When do you fe el more safe or less safe?

The purpose of this section was to explore participants’ feelings when they first arrived on the unit, and find out if those feelings changed over time.
D id you feel safe or unsafe when you first arrived? D id this feeling change over time?
What was it that made things fe el more or less safe? Was it your first experience o f a mental health ward?
Did anything happen to make you fe el frightened or worried? Other Residents
The aim of this section was to find out how participants felt about the other residents of the unit and whether this had an impact on participants’ feelings of safety or threat. How did you feel when you first met the other residents here?
How did they seem to you? D id your impression o f the other residents change as you got to know them?
Who was the first person who talked to you? D id talking to them make you fe e l better or worse?
D id anyone help you to fe e l a bit better? What did they do?
This is a mixed sex ward. How do you feel about sharing the ward with / women. Do you think you would prefer to be on a single sex ward?
How do you think it would be different? How would you feel?
On wards like people sometimes become angry or violent. Have you seen this happen? Can you tell me exactly what happened?

What did you do ? Staff
The purpose of this section was to discover how participants experienced the staff. What was your impression o f the sta ff when you first arrived? D id it change over the next fe w weeks?
D id anyone do or say anything to make you fe e l better? What was the most helpful thing they did or said?
Was there anything they did or said that made you fe e l frightened or worried, or was unhelpful?
D id you ever witness any angry, threatening or violent behaviour fro m staff? How did that make you feel?
This is a mixed ward with male and fem ale staff? How does that feel? Would you prefer the staff to be all ffemale/male?
Specific events
This section was designed to explore any actual experiences of violence Have you ever been assaulted or threatened here? Did you report it?
Have you ever witnessed anyone else being assaulted or threatened here ? How did this make you feel?
What advice would you give to someone coming on to the ward fo r the first time? What could be done to make things fe e l safer here?
The Physical Environment
This section was designed to explore how participants felt about the physical environment on the ward, such as ward design and layout, security, and bedroom configuration.
Is three anything about the building that makes you fe el more or less safe? Are there any parts o f the building where you d o n ’t feel safe?
How could the building be improved to make people fe el more safe?
Closing the Interview
The aim of this section is to thank the participant for their participation and to provide an opportunity for them to express any concerns that they may have or clarify any points they have made.
