5.3.4. COBIT 5
Before closing this chapter it should be pointed out that over the course of time the practice of acupuncture for the relief of pain may become greatly changed by future pharmaceutical innova-tions that then, in turn, will themselves have to be subjected to the rigours of carefully conducted clinical trials.
There are at least two possibilities. One is the introduction into clinical practice of a cholecys-tokinin octapeptide receptor antagonist as this would have the effect of tilting the opioid and antio-pioid balance in the central nervous system (CNS) and, by so doing, would considerably assist with the treatment of chronic pain with acupuncture (Han 1994). The other is the introduction of a ketamine-like non-toxic N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antag-onist, which would significantly decrease dorsal horn central sensitisation and thus reduce the chron-icity of such disorders as the myofascial trigger point pain and fibromyalgia syndromes.
