Game 55: May 22 at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Kyle Kleinendorst gave North Dakota State the lead with a two- run triple in the top of the eighth inning and the Bison held on for a 4-3 victory over top-seeded South Dakota State in the opening game for both teams at the Summit League Baseball Championship.

The fourth-seeded Bison improved to 23-24 overall and will face second-seeded Western Illinois at 3 p.m. Friday. SDSU, the defend- ing tournament champion, dropped to 27-28 overall and will face third-seeded Fort Wayne in an elimination game at 11 a.m. Friday at Sioux Falls Stadium. Western Illinois defeated Fort Wayne, 8-7 in 10 innings in Thursday’s first game.

Trailing 2-1, the Bison rally in the eighth inning began with a one-out infield single by Jon Hechtner, followed by a walk to Wes Satzinger. Kleinendorst then stepped to the plate and launched a 3-2 pitch for a triple off the wall in right center off SDSU starter Adam Bray to plate both Hechtner and Satzinger. Kleinendorst later scored on a wild pitch by Jackrabbit reliever J.D. Moore.

The Jackrabbits stranded two runners in the home half of the eighth, then put together a two-out rally in the ninth to draw to within a run on back-to-back two-out doubles by Scott Splett and Zach Coppola. However, Bison closer Trevor Jaunich got Aaron Machbitz, who was 3-for-5 in the game, to pop out to second base to end the game.

The Jackrabbits took a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Machbitz and Matt Johnson each singled with one out, with both runners moving up a base on a groundout. Zach Holt then dropped a bunt single down the third-base line to score Machbitz.

Ernst picked his second win over the Jackrabbits in a week, strik- ing out three and walking one in 7 2/3 innings. Jaunich earned his seventh save of the season, recording three of his four outs by strikeout.

Bray fanned Bison, fanned eight and walked only one in 7 2/3 in- nings, falling to 5-7 on the season. Splett and Sharrow tallied a pair of hits for the Jackrabbits, who also finished the night with 11 hits.

Attendance at Sioux Falls Stadium was 1,654.

The top-seeded Jackrabbits improved to 28-28 overall.

Trailing 1-0, SDSU batted around in the five-run second inning. Zach Holt and Reid Clary drew back-to-back walks to open the inning, and Cody Sharrow followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Tyler Shannon then walked to force in the tying run. Scott Splett gave the Jackrabbits the lead with a two-run single and Paul Jacobson added a two-run, bad-hop single to cap the scoring.

Fort Wayne, which scored a run in the first on a two-out single by Shane Trevino, pulled to within 5-2 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Trevino.

Jackrabbit starter Chad Hodges blanked the Mastodons for the next five innings before exiting after allowing a leadoff double to Evan VanSumeren to lead off the ninth. VanSumeren later scored on a base hit by Malcolm White, but reliever Andrew Clemen pre- vented further damage to seal the SDSU win.

Clary capped the scoring for SDSU with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth that scored pinch runner Mitch Foster.

Hodges, who improved to 8-5 on the season, struck out three, walked two and scattered nine hits in eight-plus innings.

Splett and Sharrow were each 2-for-4 for SDSU, which tallied six hits in the game but drew nine walks.

Mastodon starter Nate White recorded only three outs, walking five of the 10 batters he faced. Dane Davis kept Fort Wayne in the

game by allowing only one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings of relief.

For the second night in a row, the eighth inning proved disastrous for the South Dakota State University baseball team.

Western Illinois scored four times in the bottom of the eighth en route to a 5-2 victory at Sioux Falls Stadium, eliminating the Jackrabbits from the Summit League Baseball Championship.

Second-seeded Western Illinois, which improved to 21-31 overall, advanced to face fourth-seeded North Dakota State in the tournament championship. SDSU, the defending tournament champion and top seed, ended its season with a 28-29 overall mark.

All of Western’s damage in the eighth inning came with two outs. Jackrabbit reliever Andrew Clemen retired the first two batters, extending his scoreless innings streak to 15 before Tanner Glore singled to right field. Jake Moore then lined a single that got through right fielder Scott Splett, allowing Glore to score all the way from first and Moore to move to third. After a walk to Adam McGinnis, Brett Turner dumped a single into center to score Moore with the go-ahead run. After Payton Jeffers was hit by a pitch to load the bases, J.J. Reimer dropped a bunt single down the third- base line and the ensuing throw to the plate was errant, allowing both McGinnis and Turner to score.

WIU reliever Tyler Owings pitched a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save of the season.The game was played before 1,196 fans.
