CONCLUSIONES Y RECOMENDACIONES
CONCLUSIONES Y RECOMENDACIONES Conclusiones.
A multistage sampling technique was used to select the respondents for both the intervention and control groups.
Stage One: Two divisions were selected from the five administrative divisions in Lagos State using simple random sampling method (balloting) and they were Ikeja and Lagos divisions.
Stage Two: One local government area was selected from each division using simple random sampling and they were Ifako Ijaiye LGA from the Ikeja division and Lagos Mainland LGA from the Lagos division. By simple balloting, each of the two local government areas was assigned to either intervention or control group. Ifako Ijaiye local government area was selected as the intervention group while Lagos Mainland local government area was selected as the control group.
Stage Three
a. Selection of public schools: All public secondary schools in Lagos state are pre-
54
stratified into junior and senior secondary schools. As a result, four public schools in Lagos state were selected for the study, one senior school and one junior school in each LGA.
A list of all registered secondary schools in the state was obtained from the Lagos state Ministry of Education. This list is stratified by LGA and classifies the secondary schools as either senior or junior schools. (See Appendix A)
For the selection of junior public schools, one junior school was selected from the list of junior schools in each selected LGA by simple random sampling using a table of random numbers. The selected junior school in Ifako Ijaiye LGA was Stadium Junior Grammar School Ijaiye, while the selected junior school in Lagos Mainland LGA was Aje Comprehensive Junior High School.
For the selection of senior public schools, the same process was followed. Sonmori Comprehensive High School was selected from the list of senior secondary schools in Ifako Ijaiye LGA, while Aiyetoro Grammar School was selected from the list of senior secondary schools in Lagos Mainland LGA.
b. Selection of private schools: Private secondary schools in Lagos state are not pre-stratified into junior and senior schools but are merged together as one school for both senior and junior classes. A list of private secondary schools in Lagos state was
55
obtained from the Ministry of Education. (See Appendix B) One school was selected from each LGA by simple random sampling using a table of random numbers. Home Science Association secondary school Alagbado was selected from Ifako Ijaiye LGA (intervention) while International school, Lagos was selected from Lagos Mainland LGA (control).
Based on this selection process, a total of six schools were selected for the entire study.
They are:
Intervention:
Stadium Junior Grammar School (public)
Sonmori Comprehensive High School( public)
Home Science Association secondary school (private)
Control:
Aje Comprehensive Junior High School (public)
Aiyetoro Grammar School (public)
International School Lagos (private)
Stadium Junior Grammar School is a junior public secondary school. It has twenty classes distributed within its three arms. JSS1 & JSS2 have seven classes each while JSS3 has six classes. There is an average of 70 students in each class.
Sonmori Comprehensive High School is a senior public secondary school. The school
56
has fifteen classes distributed within its three arms. Each arm has five classes. There is an average of 45 students in each class.
Home Science Association secondary school is a privately owned school. The school has twenty-three classes distributed within its six arms. JSS1, JSS2, JSS3, SS1, &SS2 have four classes each, while SS3 has three classes. There is an average of 25 students in each class.
Aje Comprehensive Junior High School is a junior public secondary school. The school has twenty-three classes distributed within three its arms. JSS1 & JSS2 have eight classes each while JSS3 has seven classes. There is an average of 70 students in each class.
Aiyetoro Grammar School is a senior public secondary school. The school has sixteen classes distributed within its three arms. SSS1 has six classes. SSS2 and SS3 have five classes each. There is an average of 45 students in each class.
International school Lagos is a privately owned school. The school has thirty six classes distributed within its six arms. Each arm has six classes. There is an average of 45 students in each class.
Stage Four
Selection of students: Five arms (JSS2, JSS3, SS1, SS2 & SS3) were used for the
57
study. Based on the average number of students in each class and the minimum sample size calculated, one or two classes were selected from each arm.
In all the schools except Home Science Association secondary school, there were not less than fifty students in each class, hence, in these schools, one class in each arm was selected by simple balloting and used for the study. In Home Science Association secondary school, there was an average of twenty-five students in each class, so two classes were selected by simple balloting in each arm for use in the study. In total, twenty-five classes were selected and all the students in the selected classes were used for the study.
