Network of Cities and Towns Towards Sustainability is an association of municipalities committed to sustainability. Created in 1997, consists of 270 local authorities in Barcelona and Catalonia. The technical secretariat is held by the Province of Barcelona. The network operates in the working groups, within which politicians and technicians from different municipalities cooperate and discuss their problems, concerns, needs and experiences to promote projects of mutual interest. One of these groups is dedicated to Education for Sustainability, which aims to promote education, participation and environmental communication and apply it to specific areas as a tool of municipal environmental management. Its objectives have included support to municipalities in implementing environmental education programs in schools, recently held a workshop for municipalities could discuss their role in this area. It also aims to involve citizens in municipal environmental management and provides support to local authorities in organizing awareness campaigns, which are organized every year on energy saving and efficiency, waste reduction, noise, water or pollution prevention. The group consists of local technicians who meet regularly to share experiences, organize training workshops and think about campaigns and programs that are implemented in the municipalities. Visits are made to municipalities to known the local programs or activities. The group also wants to experiment with new methods and formats of awareness and training, including the use of social networking and web 2.0 or the addition of volunteer management, as well as influence the greening activities and internal management councils and municipal facilities. In 2013, the municipalities gathered in the General Assembly of the Network made the “Declaration of Lleida” which proclaimed that environmental education is an essential tool to generate responsibility and participation, and environmental management tool necessary has improved the quality of life in our cities . More than 60 municipalities have endorsed the Declaration of Lleida and are committed to give maximum support to the promotion of local environmental education.
