After you dial a new phone number with your Smartphone (one that you haven’t called before from the phone and that isn’t yet in the phone’s built-in directory), you can save that number and add it to the phone’s directory. To do this, manually enter the complete ten-digit phone number (###-###-####), and then press the left Soft Key (the Save command) on the Smartphone’s keypad.

The Select Contact screen appears on the phone’s display. Using the 4-Way Navigational button, highlight the <New Item> command and press the Action button. The Contact screen appears, allowing you to enter that person’s contact information, including their first and last name, work phone number, mobile phone number, home phone number, and so on (as shown in Figure 3-4).
Because you already entered the phone number for that person, scroll down to the appropriate field (Work Phone, Mobile Phone, Home Phone, and so on) and press the left Soft Key to execute the Input command. The phone number you manually entered appears in the appropriate field. You can now enter additional information about that contact in the various fields.
One of the last fields of the Contact input screen allows you to assign a custom ringtone to that individual. If you wish to add a custom ringtone, highlight this option, and then press the 4-Way Navigational button either left or right to scroll through the ringers currently stored within your phone. With a custom ringer assigned, you’ll hear this special ringtone every time the person calls (from the phone number you’ve stored in the phone).
When you’re finished entering a contact’s information, press the right Soft Key again when the Done command appears. The phone number, along with the person’s name and whatever other information you entered will now be stored in your phone’s contact directory. Using the Menu command (press the right Soft Key), you have

several additional options. To access any of these options, press the corresponding
number of the keypad or use the 4-Way Navigational button to highlight the command and press the Action button.
Menu options once a contact has been added include the following:
■ Add Speed Dial This allows you to add this contact (and one or more of the contact’s phone numbers) to your speed dial list.
■ Send SMS Using this option, you can send a short text message to this person using SMS Text Messaging (described in Chapter 6).
■ Add Voice Tag You can record a voice tag, which means you speak the person’s name into the phone and record it once. Later, when you activate the voice dial command, you can dial this number using your voice. For example, if you just saved your mother’s contact information, you can record the voice tag “Mom Home” into your phone. Later, when you say, “Mom Home,” her home phone number is automatically dialed.
To dial the phone using a voice command, on the Samsung i600 phone, press #84 SEND, and then say someone’s name that’s pre-programmed into the phone. Using the Motorola MPx200, from the Home screen, press and hold the Record button (the jog dial on the side of the phone). You will see the message “Recognizing Voice Tag” on the screen and hear a beep. Speak the name of the person you wish to call (using the same words you recorded when you created the voice tag). When the name of the person you’re calling is replayed to you, highlight the appropriate name on the screen and/or press the Action button to dial the number.
■ Save to SIM Depending on which model Smartphone you’re using (such as the Motorola MPx200), if the phone has a SIM card, you can save the contact information on the phone’s SIM card, as opposed to in the phone’s built-in memory. You might want to store your phone numbers or other data on a SIM card to ensure the information is properly backed up should you need to do a hard reset of the Smartphone itself and delete everything in its memory. The SIM card can also be removed from one phone and placed in another. Keep in mind that when you store information on a SIM card, it might be saved in a different format than how your Smartphone would store that data in its internal memory. This may result, depending on the application you’re running, in a slightly different format for the data.
■ Set as Default If you’ve entered multiple phone numbers for one contact (their home, work, and cell phone numbers, for example), you can set as the default, the number that you’ll call the most. This will save you button pushes later when you look up the number in your phone’s directory and wish to call the contact.
■ Beam Contact Using the infrared communications technology built into your Smartphone, you can “beam” all of the information about a specific contact to anyone else who has a Smartphone. This means you can share phone numbers and contact information without the other person needing to enter the data into their phone directly.
■ Delete This command allows you to delete a contact from your phone’s built-in directory.
■ Cancel This command exits out of the submenu you’re in and returns you to the previous screen. It closes the menu.
