DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES

San José City College is authorized by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges to confer the Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer, Associate in Science Degree for Transfer, Associate in Arts degree, the Associate in Science degree, and the Certificate of Achievement upon students who complete the necessary requirements.

Associate Degrees for Transfer (AA-T and AS-T)

These degrees are conferred upon students who intend to complete a bachelor’s degree in a similar major at a California State University campus.

Associate in Arts Degree

The Associate in Arts (AA) degree is conferred upon students who complete the minimum of 60 degree applicable semester units with a grade point average of 2.0 or better and meet the degree graduation requirements.

Associate in Science Degree

The Associate in Science (AS) degree is conferred upon students who complete the minimum of 60 degree applicable semester units with a grade point average of 2.0 or better and meet the degree graduation requirements.

DEGREE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT)

The Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) or the Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) is conferred upon students who complete 60 semester units with a grade point average of 2.0 or better and complete the following:

- The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) requirements or the California State University General Education-Breadth requirements;

- A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district;

- Obtain a minimum grade point average of 2.0;

- All courses required for the major or area of emphasis with a grade of ‘C’ or better. A “P” (Pass) grade is not an acceptable grade for courses in the major. While a minimum of 2.0 is required for admission to a California State University, some majors may require a higher GPA. (Please consult with a counselor for more information.)

ASSOCIATE IN ARTS DEGREE

- All required major courses with a grade of ‘C’ or better in each

course;

- A minimum of 39 semester units from the AA degree General Education pattern;

- SJCC graduation requirements of American History and Institutions, Cultural Pluralism/Ethnic Studies and Physical Activity;

- Competency in writing, reading and mathematics with a grade of ‘C’ or better in each competency course;

ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE

- All required major courses with a grade of ‘C’ or better in each

course;

- A minimum of 24 semester units from the AS degree General Education pattern;

- SJCC graduation requirements of American History and Institutions, Cultural Pluralism/Ethnic Studies and Physical Activity;

- Competency in writing, reading and mathematics with a grade of ‘C’ or better in each competency course;

- At least 12 units within the district and at least six (6) units in residency at SJCC

GENERAL EDUCATION RECIPROCITY

San José Evergreen Community College District participates in the California Articulation Region 4 Community College General Education/Graduation Reciprocity program. Students completing all the general education/graduation pattern requirements at a participating college will be given full credit for having completed the SJECCD general education/graduation requirements including writing, reading and mathematics, cultural pluralism/ethnic studies, American Institutions and physical activity. Students must submit to the SJCC Admission and Records a General Education Reciprocity certification form (or complete an Associate degree at any one of the participating colleges.). Students will be required to complete all courses and prerequisites required for a major as well as degree applicable electives to reach 60 units.

The other eight participating colleges are: Chabot, De Anza, Foothill, Gavilan, Las Positas, Mission, Ohlone and West Valley.

CERTIFICATES OF ACHIEVEMENT

San José City College offers Certificates of Achievement to prepare students for direct job entry. Many certificate programs can be completed in one year, while others are designed to be completed over a longer period of time. (Please consult with a counselor for more information.)

The college confers three levels of Certificates of Achievement to students who complete all required courses with a grade of ‘C’ grade.

- Certificate of Achievement Level 1 - 12- 17.5 units - Certificate of Achievement Level 2 - 18- 29.5 units - Certificate of Achievement Level 3 - 30+ units

Course Scheduling

Information regarding the days, hours, instructors, and rooms in which classes will be held in each semester and summer session is contained in the Class Schedule prior to the start of each term. The information is available online at www.sjcc.edu and on MyWeb. Registration

To receive credit, students must register in a course within the officially designated time. Auditing (attending classes without being officially registered) is not permitted. All students must be registered and all fees paid prior to attending any classes.

Semester Units

All courses in this Catalog are described in semester units. Prerequisites and Corequisites

Many of the courses offered by the College require the completion of prerequisites courses or simultaneous enrollment in an additional course, known as a corequisite. Students are advised to consult the course descriptions found in this Catalog for the identification of the prerequisites and corequisites for a course.

Advisories

In order to ensure student success, the College provides Advisory Levels to help students understand the reading, writing, and math skills needed to be successful. While these advisories are not required as a condition of enrollment, students are strongly encouraged to adhere to them and to follow the advice of their counselors related to the advisory levels. The Advisory Levels are listed under each course in the Catalog and the Schedule of Classes. The following are the list of Advisories:

ADVISORY READ LEVEL 1: Having the ability to find stated and implied main ideas in simple passages; identify important details; understand the use of new vocabulary in textbook reading passages, utilize textbook reading strategies, and understand what it means to read critically.

• READ 350 (6 units) or ESL 313 or ENGL 321: with a “P” grade required in all of these courses, or placement based on assessment ADVISORY READ LEVEL 2: Having the ability to find the stated and main idea in simple and complex passages; summarize information; sequence information in complicated texts, engage in inferential analysis of college reading materials; use study techniques for college textbooks; and use note taking systems.
