hen we were ministering in Canada several years ago, we were approached by a woman who had suffered two miscarriages and was expecting a third child.
W
As we were praying for her, we brought out a chair, because we didn’t want her to go out under the power and fall. She was tormented by the thought of losing this third child.
So we sat her down in the chair and began to minister healing to her. Suddenly, my wife, Robin, through the gift of discerning of spirits, saw the spirit that had attached itself to this woman’s body. It was literally holding her cervix open! (This is what had caused her two previous miscarriages. )
You don’t have to see into the realm of the spirit to know how to minister to people and how to bind the devil. You can know through the abilities God has put in you. You can know through the word of knowledge. And if you don’t see into the realm of the spirit or have a word of knowledge, you can still walk by faith and not by sight: You can believe God’s Word.
But in this instance, Robin told us what she saw, and then she spoke to that spirit. She said, “Let her go!” This is the way Robin and I minister: We talk to things. We talk to symptoms, and they obey us. Sometimes I know by a word of knowledge, or Robin knows by discerning of spirits that a spirit is involved.
Revelation gifts or the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit will tell you how to pray, how to minister healing, how to have a financial breakthrough, or how to bind the devil.
Robin bound the devil. She told it to go, and immediately it left the woman—but as it was leaving, it literally hit Robin in the stomach. It tried to get in one last shot on its way out. Don’t let devils do this to you. Robin resisted it, and it bounced off her.
Learn to Say No
A well-known minister was ministering healing to a hospital patient once, and the spirit jumped off the person and tried to get on the minister. It hit him in the chest. He said, “No, you can’t,” and the spirit left.
When a symptom, the enemy, or fear hits us, we’ve got to learn to say no to it. When the spirit of fear is around, it’s amazing how people panic. But it’s a spirit, and you can reject it.
About a month after praying for the Canadian woman, we got a letter from her. She went back to her doctor the day after we ministered to her, and he said, “Your cervix is closed.” We told that spirit that had afflicted her to leave, and she was instantly healed by the power of God.
But what if we had prayed, “God, please heal this woman?” or asked the Lord to do something that’s not within His realm of influence to do?
Yes, God is more than a conqueror. He is not afraid of the devil. He has authority over the devil. But on planet Earth, God gave that authority to us! And if we don’t do something about the enemy, God won’t.
An Instant Manifestation
About two years ago, we were ministering in New Orleans, and we told the congregation, “Go out and bring the sick to church. Believe in an instant manifestation of the Holy Spirit to heal people.”
So some people went out and brought back a man in an ambulance. They wheeled him into the church service on a stretcher.
He was wearing a hospital gown. He had fallen off a truck and broken his neck two years before, and he had been bedfast and crippled those 24 months.
After preaching the Word, I walked down to where the man's stretcher was. “Do you believe the Lord is going to use me to heal you tonight?” I asked.
“Yes,” he replied.
I laid my hands on him, released the power and anointing of God, commanded that infirmity to leave his body, and believed God for a miracle.
Then I asked the man, “Can you move your feet? Move your feet.” He started to move his legs up and down. I said, “Well, can you walk?”
He said, “I don’t know.”
We lifted him up, and he got off the side of the bed. Ushers were holding him, and the man was walking. His hospital gown was split in the back, and the ushers were trying to cover him up. He was walking for the first time in two years!
Because he had been paralyzed and couldn’t control his bodily functions or take care of himself, he was wearing a diaper. The diaper fell off, he stepped out of it, and he just kept walking.
Releasing the Power of God
There will always be an impossibility, but we must not allow an impossibility to hold us back. A broken neck is nothing to God’s healing power!
We’ve got to recognize that God’s healing power will surge through us. We can sense it in the tangible realm. We can become well acquainted with it. We can release it on people.
Wigglesworth learned how to release the power of God without saying a word. His very presence affected people. His faith was active to believe that the power of God in him was going to touch others, and it did. The power of God would hit them and they would start weeping when he hadn’t said a word to them about Jesus.
Once he was riding in a train, minding his own business, reading, when four men came to him and said, “We don't know what it is about you, but your presence makes us feel like we're going to die and go to hell. Would you pray for us?”
The Presence of God Fills Our Home
When we lived in Whittier, California, we had a next-door neighbor who smoked a pipe, cussed, and did everything else worldly, but was supposedly a Christian.
We held prayer meetings in our home, and he ran around town without our knowledge and circulated a petition that objected to the number of cars that were parked on the street.
One of the women in the neighborhood signed his petition, but one day she felt guilty about it. She came to our house, knocked on the door, and asked to come in.
The moment she stepped into the house, the power of God hit her, and she began shaking and sobbing. She said, “I don’t know why I did it. I’m sorry I ever did it.”
We asked, “What did you do?”
She said, “I’m sorry. I signed the petition.” “What petition?”
“The petition your next-door neighbor is getting everyone to sign against you.”
The power of God was present in our house not because that house was some kind of a temple, but because the temple of God lived in that house. It was the presence of God in and with us that released that kind of power.
I would venture to say that a high percentage of the church world doesn’t know the power of God. I’d even venture to say that many of us don’t know the power of God like we should.
The power of God honors faith. In order to be “zapped” with
God’s power, you’ve got to be tuned to the right “station.”
Uncrowned Kings
And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
Luke 10:17
Jesus answered in the next verse, “I beheld Satan as
lightning fall from heaven.” He was saying to them, “The devil
has been cast down. I saw him cast out of heaven.” Remember the prophet Isaiah’s words:
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
Isaiah 14:12
The reason why the nations and earthly governments are weakened, confused, and snared is because Lucifer fell and became the god of this world.
But there s another dimension of government in the kingdom of God to which we’re called as kings and priests. In that dimension we may not be acknowledged in public as kings and priests, but in the spirit realm, we’ll rule and reign.
Power Over All the Power of the Enemy
After Jesus told the seventy that He saw Satan as lightning fall from heaven, He continued:
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice because your names
are written in heaven.
Luke 10:19, 20
First, Jesus says, “I give you power. I give you the liberty and the ability to consistently operate in my stead; to advance by setting foot on scorpions and snakes.” That means sometimes the only direction to go is straight toward where the devil is standing!
In the natural, if you see a corridor, road, or path that s paved with scorpions and snakes, you’re not going to feel like going that way, are you? It’s not even the direction you feel led to go in.
The Lord was saying, “You do not need a special manifestation of the Spirit to defeat the devil. I give you power so you can advance.” When you start to advance, the devil and his camp will whisper, “Impossible! You can’t come this way. It’s never been done. We’re going to stop you!”
You’re beginning to step on all that the devil is attempting to use against your progress in God. But you have been given
exousia—ability, delegated authority—to operate on behalf of
Christ, and you’re not going to be stopped by the adversary.
Ignoring Authority
After Jesus gave us authority over all the power of the devil, He went on to say, “But don’t rejoice in the fact that the
spirits are subject to you; rather, rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
People have said, “See, we shouldn’t rejoice because of the miracles, or because the devil is subject to us. We should rejoice only because we’re saved.” Religious people have used that excuse to capitalize on salvation and forget about their authority!
Jesus said, “I give you authority.” Don’t base your joy on the fact that the devil is subject to you. If you base your joy on results, you’ll get excited when you see results and depressed when you don’t. And there will always be times when you’re
between victories.
The Lord was not negating the supernatural; He was simply saying, “Don’t get excited, or base your joy on the fact that the devils are subject to you. Base your joy on the fact that your names are written in heaven.”
That tells me something else. Notice He didn’t say, “But rejoice that you’re going to heaven.” That’s how we’ve interpreted it, but that s not what He said. He said, “Rejoice that
your names are written in heaven.” What does that mean? It
means that God acknowledges you as a child, and if you’re a child of God, the devil is in trouble!
My Joy Is Based on My Heritage
In other words, based on the fact that my name is written in heaven, I've got authority here on earth! My joy is not based on my authority, however. My joy is based on my heritage. I’m a child of the living God. It’s not what He gave me; it’s who He made me.
And in that same hour, according to Luke 10:21, Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit. That word “rejoiced” means He spun around, got excited, and started dancing. It means the power of God hit Him!
Has the power of God ever hit you, and joy exploded in your spirit? That s what happened to Jesus. Why? Because He had just said something that bore witness with the Holy Spirit. He said, “Rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” Boom—the power of God hit Him. He rejoiced and said:
I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes, even so, Father; for it seemed good in thy sight.
All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will revel him.
And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see.
For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
Luke 10:21-24
Here’s the clincher. Jesus got all excited and began to praise God and say, “You have hid these things from the wise and
prudent, and have revealed them unto babes.” What were
“these things”? Jesus told His disciples, “You’re blessed. Until this time, prophets and kings have desired to hear and see the things you’re hearing and seeing.” What were they seeing?
Dominion Over Darkness
For the first time in human history, the disciples were seeing men having dominion over the powers of darkness.
Even in the Old Testament, men did not have dominion over the powers of darkness. In fact, the devil is hardly referred to in the Old Testament; we only see types and shadows of him.
Men in those days fought literal adversaries or giants. The devil and the spiritual workings of evil behind the scenes did not come to light until the New Testament.
Throughout the Old Covenant you find men who were dominated by the powers of darkness; and certainly the anointing of God came on prophet, priest, and king, and they performed miracles.
But you don’t see men binding devils anywhere in the Bible before Jesus appeared on the scene. You don’t see anyone subduing the powers of darkness and walking in victory until Jesus’ day. What did God reveal to babes? Authority over the powers of darkness!
As a Christian, your name is now written in heaven. You’re a brand-new breed of people. Prophets and kings wanted to look into what you have and couldn’t.
Remember what Jesus said about John the Baptist? “Out of
everyone born of a woman, there’s not one greater than John.” Then He turned around and added, “... but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he” (Luke 7:28).
What was Jesus saying? He was saying, “If you’re going to put John up against any other person who was only born once, of a woman, and did not know the New Birth, he’s going to be the greatest.”
The New Testament, however, ushered in the New Birth, also known as the second birth. The second time you’re born, you’re born of God. John the Baptist did not experience this second birth. Therefore, when comparing him with someone who has received the New Birth and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, John will be “the least in the kingdom.”
New Testament believers are greater than John because they can step into the Christ-kind of ministry. They have many advantages over John. John didn’t have dominion over the spirits of darkness.
John didn't have what the apostles had, or what members of the Early Church had.
So the Lord said to His disciples—and to us—"your name is now written in heaven, and you have a new identity. You're not the person you used to be, a person who was overcome and trodden down by the enemy, a person who bore a resemblance to his earthly parents and took on their traits. No, you’ve been born of God, and now you can bear a resemblance to your Heavenly Father and take on His traits.”
When you receive this new identity, you open up the miraculous realm of God, and the supernatural becomes commonplace. It’s easier to talk to sickness and disease, evil spirits, and so forth. It’s easier to walk as a believer in all aspects of life.
Nicodemus the Theologian
The third chapter of John is a very familiar portion of Scripture; however, I believe that only one aspect of it has been explained. We need to look at it in another light. The chapter begins:
There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
John 3:1, 2
Nicodemus had his theology together! He knew more about doctrine than most Christians do. Today we think that no man can do these miracles, only God, but Nicodemus said, “Except
God be with him....”
Acts 10:38 tells us, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth
with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” God was with Jesus; Nicodemus was
theologically correct.
The Kenneth S. Wuest translation says, “Rabbi, we know
positively that from God you have come, a teacher; for no one is able to keep on constantly performing these attesting miracles which you are constantly performing, except God be with him.”
Jesus answered [Nicodemus] and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
John 3:3
We’ve interpreted this to mean that Nicodemus told Jesus something, and Jesus brushed it aside and told him, “Never mind that Nicodemus. You must be born again.” But that’s not what was said!
Seeing the Kingdom of God
Nicodemus was literally fascinated—and so were the Pharisees—by the fact that this man Jesus had authority. Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, Except a
man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
We’ve always thought that meant Nicodemus would not go
