According to the specific conclusions listed above, further research on zein protein-based hydrogels and aerogels may take the following directions:
1. Regarding the copper ion chelation capacities of the hydrogels, future studies may introduce other metal ions for chelation tests, such as Fe3+, Cr3+, Cr6+, Zn2+, Pb2+. These are common heavy metal ions found in water and soil. Moreover, the influence of the treatment time, pH, and the initial feed concentration on the amount of metal ions to be removed may be studied. This will provide a more thorough assessment of the potential of these materials as heavy metal ion chelators.
2. The effects of the formulation on the absorption capacity of zein-based aerogels can further be studied by varying the amount of crosslinker and initiators used.
Moreover, since aerogels have been synthesized from hydrogels, the impact on the swelling time (e.g. after swelling for 0.5 h, 1 h, 1.5 h) may results in variations of the microstructure of the resultant aerogels. Finally, the oil absorption tests should also be carried out on other types of oil, such as crude oil and gasoline.
