Why did you choose your course?
College was something I never really gave much thought to until I got to the CAO process, it was just something that I thought I needed to do to get a job! I chose my course as I have a real interest in dealing with people and business seemed the right choice. Before choosing BBS, I researched the course and the subject matter on strategic management in particular as it was something that really interested me.
Why did you choose IT Sligo?
I spoke with a few graduates and, based on what they were working at and the positive experience they had experienced at IT Sligo, I chose the course. It was close to home for me and that was a factor in my decision-making as I thought at the time that it would be handy to get home from Sligo at the weekends – I had a friend studying in Cork and I wasn’t up for all that travel.
What is your current role/job?
Chief Operating Officer at Farmlands Co-operative Society, Christchurch, New Zealand, a long way from lovely Leitrim and IT Sligo.
How would you describe the job you are doing?
I have responsibility for specific operations within the business and provide leadership and management throughout the organisation. I work closely with the CEO on areas of strategy and operational development. Farmlands is the number one rural supplies and services farmer-owned co-operative in New Zealand. Our business has a turnover of NZ$2.2 bln, over 1,000 staff members, 54,000 shareholders and is based throughout the North and South Islands.
How did the course prepare you for this role?
I gained some technical skills like financial accounting and, more importantly, management accounting for my current role. Problem-solving is the other key skill which I learned as part of my studies at college. While I don’t use theory in my everyday job, learning the way in which other organisations do things through case studies and understanding management theory helps me to identify, assess and create action plans to solve problems and capture opportunities.
from and, as a former president of IT Sligo Students’ Union and the Union of Students in Ireland, I have travelled to most and IT Sligo is up there with the best of them! Colleges are made great by their student cohort and you, as a prospective or current student, are the life of the college. IT Sligo will not disappoint, I loved every minute of it. My only advice is get involved, try new things and get the best out of your college experience and the best out of yourself.
“Colm first came to my attention and that of CRT though a Gulf Oil connection when we met at a conference in Rotterdam in May 2011. Colm was a standout out of the group of attendees we met at this event. We were preparing to launch Gulf into the New Zealand market and invited Colm to travel to New Zealand in July to support our launch. That visit confirmed that Colm was a good fit with our company
and fortunately he also liked what he saw in New Zealand, despite the fact our beautiful city of Christchurch had been severely damaged by recent earthquakes. As CRT had grown from a NZ$362m company to more than NZ$1bln in my eight years as CEO, I had been looking for someone with some special talents to join our executive team as my Chief Operating Officer. Colm was offered the position, then returned to Ireland and married his wife and the newlyweds migrated to New Zealand in January 2012 to commence his role. It was a brave move for both parties. For CRT by bringing someone
into such a senior level with no direct experience in our rural services market, and for Colm and his wife to travel to a city devastated by earthquake on the other side of the world to join a co-operative that he knew was in serious merger discussions with another co-operative. Both parties were required to take a leap of faith in their own belief in their decisions.
So much of good executive leadership is the ability to make assessments like that, and to make a decision and to back yourself to achieve. Colm has done that significantly in the 14 months he has been in New Zealand. Not only did he contribute well in the first twelve months, he has now been confirmed as the Chief Operating Officer of the newly merged company Farmlands Co-operative Society Ltd, a NZ$2.2 bln co-operative with 54,000 farmer shareholders and ranked at around number 12 in New Zealand companies by revenue. Not bad progress for a lad from Leitrim. Hopefully his
