This thesis has contributed to a better understanding of milk FA composition and change in live weight as indicators of energy balance. The following areas of research need to be investigated in New Zealand grazing dairy cattle:
- Estimation of phenotypic and genetic correlations among live weight change, milk FA and
fertility traits, within- and across the main breed groups.
- Development of a selection index for the genetic improvement of fertility in seasonal
calving cows; this index should include concentration of the most relevant FA identified in this study and traits related to energy balance and body fat mobilization.
