A comprehensive program designed to provide students with skills and hands-on instruction in the auto body industry. The course focuses on learning filling and sanding; welding, cutting, and repairs of metal surfaces; repair replacement of auto body parts; shop safety, and trade ethics. The class uses the latest water based painting system. Students also learn the latest technology for the auto refinishing and painting industry. This class combines classroom and hands-on experience to teach surface preparation, painting and detailing, as well as project planning, teamwork, and design.

This automotive training program instruction covers basic knowledge in brakes, suspension and steering, engine performance, and electricity/electronics. Course content includes instruction in safety, industry standards, related automobile operational theory, diagnosis and troubleshooting, and repair procedures. This hands-on course focuses on automotive parts, carburetion, front-end alignment, major engine tune-ups, fuel systems, brakes, and more.

Students learn children’s development and teaching techniques, job and career opportunities in the field, safety precautions, school emergency procedures, employment preparation, growth and development of children, and valuable experience working in a variety of settings. On-the-job training at a childcare facility, pre-schools or elementary school sites will be an integral part of the program. Students participate in an internship and assume a variety of teaching
responsibilities during this training period.

Students will get an introduction to computer programming and web development. Students will study preparation materials for the A+ and Network + Certification exams. This course also includes access to official CISCO curriculum to allow students to pursue CISCO certifications. These certifications are designed to document an applicant’s knowledge of basic PC troubleshooting, networking and repair techniques. Students will learn how to diagnose
software application and setup, as well as introductions into game programming and networking. Included in this course is the history and theory of robotic technology, computer control systems, and artificial intelligence. Students will compete in SkillsUSA and STRUT competition. Students will understand the variety of occupations in the information technology sector.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY I,II (GREEN TECHNOLOGY) 3 HOUR CLASS
Construction Technology is a course in fundamental construction skills. These building concepts include project planning, print reading, foundations, framing, electrical and plumbing, and finish work. In addition to the basics, students will gain experience with alternative energy systems, energy auditing, solar technology and other green construction practices. Construction Technology involves classroom and work-site competencies in the following areas: basic construction math, project organization, starting the job, foundations and support structures, practices and procedures for standard wood framing, exterior wall and roof coverings, repairing and/or altering old and new structures and new technologies.
DENTAL ASSISTING
3 HOUR CLASS
The Dental Assisting Program prepares students with a solid foundation for entering the Dental career pathway with opportunities such as Dental Assisting, X-Ray Technician, Hygienist, and Dental specialties. Upon successful completion of this course, student will receive a certificate of completion, a California Dental X-Ray certificate, and an Infection Control Certificate. Instruction includes 400 hours of internship in a dental office. The program includes on-the-job instruction from Dental professionals in their offices.

FIRST RESPONDER
3 HOUR CLASS
The First Responder Training Program (FRTP) includes topics most applicable to first responders who are law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical services personnel. These emergency response professionals must be trained and equipped for virtually any situation. This course provides instruction in systems and structures of surface anatomy and key principles of physiology. The basic functions of the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and the respiratory system are presented. Second semester provides opportunities for on-site training in medical facilities and ride along with different fire stations for students.

MEDICAL CAREERS I,II(MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES)
3 HOUR CLASS
An extensive medical program offering instruction in a range of health related careers such as Nursing, Medial Assistant, Pharmacy Aide, Central Supply Aide, Laboratory Aide, Radiology Aide and front office skills. The program also covers administrative procedures and terminology needed to perform paperwork associated with the operation of a medical facility or physician's office. First semester covers Medical terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Vital signs, and career research.
Second semester provides on-site training in
community medical facilities, and/or exam preparation to become a California Certificated Medical Assistant (CCMA). Students that do not have internship will have front office skills, such as billing bookkeeping, scheduling, and reception.

RETAIL FLORAL DESIGN/EVENT PLANNING
3 HOUR CLASS
From sporting events to corporate functions, students will learn to manage and plan events, negotiate contracts and set budgets to meet the needs of perspective clients. Students will learn that the ability to be organized and “think on their feet” is a big part of event planning. Retail floral is one component the class uses to teach skills that relate to both floral design as well as event planning. Students will acquire practical skills and knowledge by exploring the history of floral art and applying elements and principles of design through use of floral art media. Curriculum will include problem solving, creative thinking, and written and verbal communication skills. Students learn preparation and design techniques of floral arrangements, supply ordering, coordinating with vendors, sales procedures and customer service. Individual creative talents are developed through a variety of hands-on projects and events(students work
on outside events as well as catered events with the culinary class).

Explore sound, graphics, animation, and video as they emerge in DVD and web-based technologies. Students will build a multimedia portfolio while learning design tools and techniques in Dreamweaver, Flash, Director, Photoshop, and Premiere. Desktop productions, color theory, elements of design, as well as career preparation are covered. This course utilizes computers to introduce students to the dynamic field of graphic design. Students learn to use computers to produce illustrations and manipulate images to achieve a desired look and purpose. Custom T-shirt design and creation is used to learn Adobe software and other concepts such as layering and separating colors for print.

ACADEMY INTERNSHIPS
One or two semester course, units based on hours served, grades 10-12.
Prerequisites: Students must be highly motivated to
serve the community and have the personal time to do the internship or service learning project outside of the regular school day. Students must be committed to meeting with the Internships teacher after school three times a quarter to review process and progress.
Description: Academy Internships is designed to
empower students and to build collaborative relationships within the local community. The structure of the Internship class is designed from a combined service learning, empowerment, and transformative learning perspective. It is set up with a series of empowering activities including preplanning, initial exploration, site selection, and contract design. The requirements for the Internships course include a commitment to academic education and skill
development that are couched within an emancipatory pedagogy. Through transformative learning, students can become empowered citizens. Through school- community partnerships, the potential for ameliorating social problems is strengthened. As we create a new community of learners in the twenty-first century, the role of the school in the community may be
strengthened through the Academy Internships class.
AVID
Full year course, 5 units each semester, grades 9
Prerequsites: Teacher/counselor recommendation,
GPA of 2.0 or above upon enrollment, average or above average standardized test scores and student’s personal goal of attending college.
Description: The AVID course is an elective class
for students who are college-bound. The AVID
organizational skills and reading (WICOR) through the AVID High School curriculum in both teacher and tutor-led activities. While concurrently enrolled in a college-prep course of study, students learn strategies to enhance success. Note-taking, outlining, writing, speaking, reading, test-taking strategies and self-awareness are stressed.
SCHOOL SERVICE
One or two semester course, 5 units each semester, grades 11- 12.
Prerequisites: Most assignments require computer literacy,
excellent attendance, and a willingness to work. Students must be placed in program by their counselor. Students are not guaranteed their choice of teacher.
Description: Students are provided with an opportunity to gain
on-the-job experience at various work stations in the high school setting under the supervision of a staff member. These work stations may include assignment as a teacher’s aide, office aide, clerical aide, cafeteria aide, maintenance aide, recycling aide, or student tutor. On-the-job experiences may include filing, typing, answering phones, delivering messages, assisting other students, recycling, working in the cafeteria, assisting the custodians.
Note: School Service does not meet the Career Technical
graduation requirement. Variable credit will be earned for late entry. Students entering after the quarter grading period will receive 2.5 units out of the 5 units/semester. A combined maximum of 10 units may be earned in School Service and/or Lab Assistant.
AVID TUTOR
Full year course 5 units each semester, grades 11-12
Prerequisites: Recommendation of AVID elective teacher and
tutor training as provided by the AVID regional offices. Student tutors must agree to sign a confidentiality agreement.
Description: Student tutors are expected to tutor 5-7 students
two times a week, and assist the teacher in providing academic and organizational skills to the students. The tutors are expected to be able to tutor in at least three subjects in which they have been successful at an Honors or Advanced Placement level, which include, but are not limited to Foreign Language, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. Tutors will receive instruction in tutoring students using the inquiry method that encourages higher level thinking by the students who are being tutored.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP
Full year course, 5 units each semester, grades 10-12
Prerequisites: Elected ASB and class officers are required to
enroll. Other interested students may enroll on the basis of application interview and recommendation of two teachers. A "C" average is required of all students enrolled in Leadership Workshop.
Description: Students will plan and implement Castro Valley
High School student activities. This course offers practical application of leadership skills: communication, decision- making, goal setting, planning and organizing, parliamentary procedure, and public speaking. Leadership students will be expected to put in hours beyond class time including, but not limited to, working in the student store, community service, and event set-up/clean-up.
YOUTH FOR SOCIAL CHANGE
Full year course, 5 units each semester.
Prerequisite: A "C" average is required for this
course. Students must have the approval of the Peer Support, Conflict Mediation or Youth 2 Youth Advisor before course sign-up.
Description: This elective course is designed to
teach students the skills needed to become effective peer educators. The semester course will explore topics including social psychology, group dynamics, public speaking, leadership, mentoring, counseling techniques, dispute resolution skills and program planning. The course will utilize a variety of
modalities such as experiential learning via classroom presentations, research and fieldwork, program planning, implementation and evaluation.
OUTSIDE WORK EXPERIENCE
One or two semester course, up to 10 units each semester, grades 11-12
Prerequisite: Student must be at least 16 years of
age and be employed in a job that fits within
Department of Labor guidelines for the student’s age and full-time student status. Student must have a job prior to enrolling.
Description: Outside Work Experience (OWE)
provides the student with an opportunity to earn school credit while working in the community and help in finding a full time position upon graduation from high school. Students are supervised by the OWE teacher and must meet twice a week for related classroom instruction, which includes such topics as job search strategies and techniques, interviewing skills, employer-employee relationships, and filing income tax forms. Necessary forms and contracts must be submitted to the OWE teacher in order to begin receiving credit. Upon successful completion of the course, the amount of credit earned depends upon the number of hours worked (36 hours
worked=1 unit of credit), with the maximum number of units allowed upon graduation being 20 units within the two semester time limit. Deadline for proof of
employment is the third week of class. Note:
Outside Work Experience will not meet the graduation requirement for Career Technical Education. This class is limited to 33 students per section.
