This programme links up with the specific curriculum structure of the BTh. From a broad theological base it tapers towards theological scientific specialisation and research at master’s level.

(b) Admission requirements

(i) Subject to the stipulations of General Regulations G.1.3, G.31 and G.54, a student who holds a BD, or a BTh degree, or another theological postgraduate qualification deemed equivalent by the Dean, and who passed all the final year subjects or modules with at least 60%, is allowed to the MTh.

(ii) Both Hebrew and Greek on at least 200 level are required, if curriculum (aa) is chosen, or if curriculum (bb) is chosen with Old Testament or New Testament Studies as main subject. In case Hebrew 200 or Greek 200 was not passed at a university, the student may be admitted after assessment and with the approval of the head of department.

(iii) Students who obtained the Postgraduate Diploma in Theology and who have achieved at least 60% in all the modules or at least 65% in all the modules of the subject which is to be continued in MTh, are admitted to the second year of curriculum (aa).

(iv) Students who have completed the MDiv (Regulation T.8) successfully and who have obtained an average of 60% in all the modules of the first year of study for the MDiv or an average of at least 65% in the first year in all the modules of that subject which is to be continued in the MTh, are admitted to the second year of Curriculum (aa).

(v) A head of department in consultation with the Dean may set additional admission requirements.

The first year of study consists of the following coursework semester modules:

(1) Dogmatics and Christian ethics: DCE 810, 820 (2) Science of religion and missiology: GSW 810, 820 (3) Church history and church polity: KGS 810, 820 (4) New Testament studies: NTW 810, 820 (5) Old Testament studies: OTW 810, 820 (6) Practical theology: PRT 810, 820

(ii) Second year of study

(1) One of the subjects of the first year is continued as specialised field of study and main subject in the second year.

(2) A mini-dissertation in the major subject. Curriculum (bb)

(i) A major subject and two ancillary subjects selected in consultation with the head of department and the Dean.

(ii) A dissertation of limited extent on the main subject. (e) Examinations and pass requirements

(i) Examinations for Curriculum (aa) in the first year of study are written at the end of each semester module, for the rest according to the schedule of completion set by the head of department in consultation with the

Dean.

(ii) A subminimum of 50% must be obtained in the examination and the mini- dissertation/dissertation. The stipulations of G.39.11 regarding pass requirements for dissertations apply mutatis mutandis to mini- dissertations. The mini-dissertation/dissertation is evaluated and examined in accordance with the stipulations set out in a study guide, which is available at request from the various departments.

(f) Degree with distinction Curriculum (aa)

The degree is conferred with distinction on a student who obtained at least 75% in 9 semester modules of the first year and in the major subject and mini- dissertation of the second year.

Curriculum (bb)

The degree is conferred with distinction on a student who obtained at least 75% in both the major subject and the dissertation, and an average of at least 75% in the ancillary subjects.

Complete new program from 2016 (a) General

This programme offers the student with a four year BDiv, a BThHons or equivalent qualification, the opportunity of theological specialisation and research at Master’s level. The coursework modules provide the opportunity to acquire specialist skills in the practical field of the Ministry.

(b) Admission requirements

(i) Subject to the stipulations of General Regulations G.1.3 and G.54, the BDiv, the BThHons or BAHons (Theology), or the previous BD or MDiv degree or an equivalent qualification, is required for admission, provided that a minimum of 65% was obtained.

(ii) The theological discipline which is selected must correlate with the major or one of the majors of the preceding degree if its curricular structure provided for majors.

(iii) Hebrew at 200 level if Old Testament Studies is chosen as field of study. In case Hebrew 200 was not passed at a university, the student may be admitted after assessment and with the approval of the head of department.

(iv) Greek at 200 level if New Testament Studies is chosen as field of study. In case Greek 200 was not passed at a university, the student may be admitted after assessment and with the approval of the head of department.

(v) MTh in Pastoral Family Therapy: A prospective student is required to do an admission test to determine the academic merits and therapeutic potential. The student must apply before the end of October with the Department of Practical Theology for admission to the programme the following academic year. A reading list will be given in preparation for an admission examination early in the new academic year. The admission test must be passed with at least 65%.

(i) A student must choose one of the following theological fields of study in consultation with the supervisor:

(1) Church History and Church Polity (2) New Testament Studies (3) Old Testament Studies (4) Practical Theology

(5) Science of Religion and Missiology (6) Dogmatics and Christian Ethics

(ii) One of the following curriculum options must be selected in consultation with the supervisor, to complete the MTh:

(1) A programme with seminar work and a mini-dissertation; or (2) A dissertation.

(iii) Dissertation

(1) In the case of seminar work and a mini-dissertation, the proposed title must be submitted for approval to the Research Committee via the Supervisor and the Head of department before a student may commence with the writing of the mini-dissertation;

(2) In the case of the dissertation only, the proposed title, research design and methodology must be submitted for approval to the Research and Ethics Committee via the supervisor and the head of department before a student may commence with the writing of a dissertation. The final title must be approved by the Postgraduate Committee and submitted to the faculty board for notification before submission of the thesis for examination.

(e) Pass requirements

A subminimum of 50% is required in the examination. At least 50% is required as a pass mark for the mini-dissertation or dissertation.

The stipulations of G.39.11 regarding pass requirements for dissertations apply with the necessary changes to mini-dissertations. Mini-dissertations are evaluated and examined in accordance with the stipulations set out in a study guide, which is available on request from the various departments.

(f) Degree with distinction

In order to pass with distinction, a weighted average (GPA) of at least 75% in the examination of the coursework and 75% for the mini-dissertation, or at least 75% for the dissertation must be obtained.
