Michael Smyth is a partner in Heenan Blaikie’s Labour and Employment Law group in the Toronto office. Mr. Smyth provides advice to employers to assist them with grievances and arbitrations, discipline and terminations, human rights issues and complaints, certification applications, corporate restructuring, collective bargaining and employment contracts.
In addition to acting as lead spokesperson in collective bargaining on behalf of employers in private, public and not-for-profit sectors, he has also assisted employers behind the scenes in helping them to negotiate collective agreements within their mandate. He then provides ongoing advice regarding the administration of the collective agreement.
Mr. Smyth regularly appears before administrative tribunals, consensual arbitrators under collective agreements and the Ontario Labour Relations Board on a variety of matters, including applications for certification and unfair labour practice complaints. He has also appeared on behalf of federally regulated employers before the Canada Industrial Relations Board.
Mr. Smyth is a member of the Executive of the Education Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association and is recognized as a leading practitioner in the area of Labour and Employment Law in the 2013 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada (Woodward/White).

Julie-Anne Cardinal is a member of Heenan Blaikie's Labour and Employment Law Group.
She advises clients in both English and French on a wide range of labour and employment law matters, including grievance arbitrations, occupational health and safety matters, employment standards and workplace policies, pensions and human rights.
A journalist by training, Julie-Anne worked as a marketing and communications executive at three leading Canadian mutual fund companies before entering law school. She has completed the Canadian Securities Course, as well as several professional development programs focusing on corporate messaging and communications, and competitive intelligence gathering and analysis.
During her legal studies, Julie-Anne earned a certificate in International Business Law at Queen’s University’s International Study Centre in Herstmonceux, UK, examining areas such as global trade and labour issues. She also acted as a student-member of the Queen’s University Correctional Law Project, advising and assisting inmates at hearings before federal penitentiary disciplinary courts and the National Parole Board. Finally, Julie-Anne served on various committees and special projects, including the faculty’s Admissions Committee, Pro Bono Students Canada, and the Queen’s Law Journal.
Julie-Anne joined Heenan Blaikie in 2011 after summering and articling with a boutique labour and employment law firm.

Andrew Bratt is an associate in Heenan Blaikie’s Labour and Employment Law group.
Andrew advises clients on a wide range of labour and employment matters, including employment standards, wrongful dismissal claims, grievance arbitrations, employment contracts, workplace policies and human rights and accommodation.
A graduate of the University of Ottawa, Andrew was a Dean’s Honour List and first-class honours student and was awarded the Éditions Yvon Blais Prize for the highest academic standing in the Common Law National Program Contracts course. In 2006, Andrew was part of the University’s two-member team that won the Guy-Guérin Cup, a provincial moot court competition, and was awarded the prize for best examination-in-chief. He also participated in the Sopinka Cup national trial advocacy competition. Andrew ranked among the top 15 percent of students of the University and was admitted to the Golden Key International Honour Society, a premier collegiate society that recognizes academic achievement and excellence among college and university students from all academic disciplines.
Andrew is a regular and significant contributor to The Duty to Accommodate in Employment, the leading text on the subject, published by Canada Law Book, which has been cited in several arbitration and court decisions across Canada.
