Some people seem fireballs of energy, able to eat what they like without putting on weight, while others need a lighter pace and easily gain weight. Such differ ences are largely due to the thyroid glaQd in the neck. If it is underactive, the whole body slows down -you feel lethargic and cold, cannot think fast. lose appetite, but still gain weight. If

it is overactive, you burn up energy, tend to lose weight, and may be excitable and nervous. A healthy thyroid is vital to well being. In te Shoulderstand, your concentration and circula tion are entirely directed to the thyroid, as it is massaged and stimulated, restoring a healthy metabolism.

186 YOGA AND HEALTH

Glands

All the intricate life functions of body chemistry are regulated by the "ductless" or endocrine glands, secreting their chemical

into the blood· stream. like the opposing muscles of the skeletal system, the endocrine system acts on a principle of balance- one hor · mone stimulates a set of re sponses, another inhibits it. and all act together in a complex interrelationship with each

other, and with the sympathetic nervous system, under the con trol of the pituitary, and ultimate ly of the brain and mind. The endocrine system mediates the intimate relationship of body and mind-emotions such as fear or rage, love or grief, both reflect hormonal activity and influence

it strongly. A severe shock or tragedy upsets the whole sys tem, ana may cause illness. Yoga can restore the system balance before long term dam

age is done.

Female sex hormones The ovaries are the main source of oestrogen, the hormone which regulates the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, breast feed ing, and female physical appear ance and sexuality. The Back ward and Forward Bends mas sage the womb and ovaries, the Cobra being especially helpful for painful or irregular menstrua tion.

The pituitary gland

Male sex hormones

The testes are the main source of the male sex hormone, testo sterone. Regular practice of asanas, pranayama and relaxa tion keeps the male hormones in balance and helps to relieve sexual problems and disorders.

This master gland regulates secretion in all the other endo crine glands, and is directly controlled by the brain. The Headstand is the most beneficial asana here.

J, p1t,yitary gland

 i Thyroid and parathyroid

The thyroid controls the basal metabolic rate, growth, and cell processes. The parathyroid con

trols calcium and phosphate

in the blood. Both are mass· aged by the Shoulderstand.

Pancreatic and adrenal glands

The secretions of these glands are essential to life, affecting your emotional and physical' state strongly. The pancreas produces insulin to regulate blood sugar, and is. helped by the Peacock which massages it and the spleen. The adrenal cortex produces sex hormones, and the vital corticosteroids; the medulla secretes adrenalin (also released at sympathetic nerve endings). to arouse the body to "fight or flight". Asanas. relaxa tion and meditation stabilize stress reactions and adrenalin secretion.

Nerves

A healthy nervous system en ables you to meet every event of life with calm and resilience. It keeps all the muscles, organs and tissues of the body working at full efficiency, gives sharper sensory perception, and creates a sense of vitality and energy in your whole being. The nervous system is made up of large numbers of individual cells, or neurones, each with a cell body and long projecting fibres that transmit rapid trains of nerve impulses or signals. Bundles of fibres together form the large nerves, which are stretched and purified by your asanas. By clearing toxins from the tissues, the asanas benefit neurotrans mission at the fine nerve end ings, and at synapses between nerves. Yoga has been shown to stabilize the response of the nervous system to stress, re moving the constant muscular tension produced by repeated alerts from the central nervous system, and calming the in voluntary symptoms of threat racing heart, sweating, anxiety roused by the sympathetic ner · vous system.

Peripheral Nervous System The spinal nerves leave the cord in pairs from either side of each segment, and branch finely to

form the peripheral system. The motor (efferent) fibres carry in structions to every muscle, the sensory (afferent) fibres bring in information from every receptor. The autonomous system (sympathetic/parasympathetic) which mediates involuntary functions. also arises from the spine: sympathetic nerve fibres carry major ganglia (control cen tres). close to the spinal column. which are toned by stretching the spine. Yogis can achieve voluntary infiuence of the sym pathetic system.

THE VITAL BALANCE 187

Central Nervous System The central nervous system is the power house and com munications centre of the body. From their deep roots in the cord, the spinal nerves spread out to serve every part of the system. Within the cord, a ceaseless intercommunication takes place, and impulses travel rapidly up and down the sensory and motor fibres. to and from the brain. The asanas work strongly on every part of the spinal column. indirectly stretch ing the spinal cord, toning the nerve roots and freeing the nerves of any pressure as they emerge from the spinal column.
