The Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Added Authorization program, offered through Extended Learning, is comprised of two, 3-unit courses that enable candidates to demonstrate the following student learning outcomes and be recommended for the ASD Added Authorization.

Student Learning Outcomes

Candidates will demonstrate proficiency in …

1. articulating current theory and research regarding the basis for and characteristics of ASD and the resulting implications for student learning and functioning.

2. using a variety of assessment approaches to develop personalized instruction for students with ASD.

3. knowing the unique language, communication, social, behavioral, sensory, and processing characteristics of students with ASD and the implications of these characteristics for student support, instruction, program planning and service delivery.

4. implementing multi-faceted evidence-based methodologies and strategies inclusive of high and low tech assistive technology and augmentative communication systems, visual strategies, structured teaching, positive behavior supports, and social skills instruction to engage and teach students with ASD.

To be recommendation for the ASD Added Authorization, a candidate must complete the courses with grades of C+ or better and hold a valid California Preliminary or Clear Mild/Moderate Education Specialist or Learning Handicapped credential or be eligible for the preliminary credential prior to

recommendation. Additionally, courses in this authorization may be considered part of coursework for the CSUSM Master of Arts in Education degree and for completing a Clear Education Specialist program.

The Bilingual Authorization is a program offered in conjunction with the Integrated Credential Program, Multiple Subject, Middle Level, Single Subject, Education Specialist, and Intern options. The Bilingual Authorization Program is for those individuals wishing to provide primary language instruction in this case Spanish to second language learners. This program is designed to provide credential candidates with primary and second language theory, curricula, instructional strategies, and methodology and is specially designed to instruct students in both their native language and in English language development across the content core curricula. Also, any candidate with a valid CA teaching credential can add a Bilingual Authorization. The School of Education offers coursework and clinical practice which will qualify candidates with the requisite skills, knowledge, and disposition to design, implement, and teach in Spanish-English bilingual programs.

Student Learning Outcomes

Candidates will acquire competence for standards through performance-based assessments that will be demonstrated through the following:

1. Successful completion of two Bilingual Authorization content courses a) Learn about the context for bilingual education and bilingualism b) Examine bilingual methodology and cultural contexts

2. Successful completion of a field experience/clinical practice in a bilingual setting or its equivalent 3. Successful completion of a Spanish language assessment - CSET LOTE III Exam: Spanish Language

and Communication

There are two (2) requirements to be recommended for the Bilingual Authorization Program: Spanish 1. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish by passing the CSET-LOTE Subset III Exam –

TPE Assessment

Beginning January 1, 2011, all candidates entering programs that result in the issuance of a Preliminary Education Specialist Instruction Credential must demonstrate satisfactory performance through

coursework and verified clinical practice on the full range of Preliminary Education Specialist Teaching Performance Expectations and develop a written Individualized Transition Development Plan for use in the candidate’s Clear Credential Program.

Clear Credential Requirements

All teachers holding a Preliminary Education Specialist Instruction Credential must clear the credential within five years of credential issuance by obtaining a Clear Education Specialist Instruction Credential. An essential clearing requirement is the development of a written Individualized Induction Plan (IIP) of supported induction and job related advanced professional preparation approved and signed by the clear credential candidate, an employer designee, and a CTC-approved clear credential program sponsor (e.g., district BTSA program, University, County Office of Education). Page 48 READING AND LITERACY ADDED AUTHORIZATION

The School of Education offers a Reading and Literacy Added Authorization Program as a focus area within the General Option in the Master’s Program. The purpose of the Reading and Literacy Added Authorization is to prepare teachers to assist other teachers and administrators in the areas of the language arts – reading, writing, listening, and speaking – both in creating literacy programs and across the

curriculum. Teachers will become knowledgeable about current reading and writing theory, literacy research and pedagogy, literacy development and learning, children’s and adolescent literature, assessment and curriculum development. Candidates must hold a CTC-approved valid basic teaching credential (or equivalent). Three years of full-time teaching experience is required prior to

recommendation for the Reading and Literacy Added Authorization.

Student Learning Outcomes

The student learning outcomes for the certificate are defined by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The Reading Certificate authorizes the holder to assess student reading and provide reading instruction in response to those assessments. Reading Certificate holders are also authorized to develop, implement, and adapt the reading content curriculum and assist classroom teachers in these areas. Holders of the Reading Certificate may perform those services at one or more school sites at the grade levels authorized by their prerequisite teaching credential.
