Part hotel, part museum, Dwarikas combines traditional style and heaps of character with excellent service. The hotel construction features rescued traditional wooden panels, lovingly restored by craftsmen in the hotel workshop. It is a true one off and has won many awards for its work. A swimming pool and restaurant complete the facilities.

Our opinion: One of the best hotels in Kathmandu. A real treat.

Gangtey Palace is location about 10 minutes from the centre of Paro on the valley slopes. It is a traditional Bhutanese style building, predominantly wooden with a small courtyard area in the centre and a separate dining room and bar which have delightful views over Paro. Gangtey Palace has 19 rooms in total which vary in size. Hot stone baths can be arranged, this is a great way to relax after a day sightseeing in the Paro valley. Facilities are simple but it certainly has charm and a relaxed and friendly ambience. Some of the rooms are up some rather steep and narrow staircases which are not ideal for those with knee problems or limited mobility, so please let us know if you would rather be on a lower level.

Our opinion: This hotel is of a relatively simple standard but it has so much character and charm that it is a firm favourite for a stay in Paro.

Located in the city centre the Jumolhari is a clean, comfortable boutique hotel with 26 rooms. Having been recently refurbished it is one of the better hotels in Thimpu. As well as local Bhutanese dishes, the restaurant also serves Indian, Chinese and continental cuisine. Foreign exchange is available here and the hotel also has a business centre, steam/sauna and an express laundry service. Our opinion: In terms of its central location and clean, well kept rooms, the Jumolhari remains an excellent choice for a stay in Thimpu.

Lying approximately 5 km from Punakha village and with good views of the valley area, the property is owned and managed by the well-respected former Penlop (regional governor) of Punakha. The 20 rooms are spacious and there are lovely views down across the river and the valley. There is a large dining area and bar where you can relax after a day exploring the Punakha valley. Food is a combination of Bhutanese, Indian and Chinese, lunch and evening meals are served as a buffet.

Our opinion: A pleasant small resort in this beautiful valley. Past clients have commented that service standards here can be variable but compared with other accommodation close by this really is the best of the options available.

HOBJIKHA

This hotel opened in January 2005 and is surrounded by 3 acres of land just 3 kms south from the main Gangtey Gompa monastery and just few minutes walking distance from the meadows where the endangered Black Necked Cranes reside during the winter months.

The hotel unit is developed next to the Phuntshocholing farm guesthouse run by Aum Karma's family. The spacious complex consists of 16 rooms built in Bhutanese architectural style each with bathroom with shower, wood-burning stove (Bukhari) for heating. The restaurant overlooks the farm and valley and has a well stocked bar. Our opinion: As the Phobjikha valley is remote electricity is provided by generators. The hotel usually turns off the generator at about 9pm to save power to be prepared for an early night! This is easily the best standard category hotel in the valley where the majority of accommodation is very basic.

The Mepham is located on the east of the valley side of Jakar. The rooms are large with wooden floors and traditional bukhari stoves to keep you warm on cold nights. From the hotel restaurant there are good views down towards the valley. The hotel has eighteen rooms which are simple but attractive. It is possible to walk into Jakar from here, following the road down the hill it takes around 20 minutes. The staff are friendly and keen to ensure you have a comfortable stay. They can help you with anything from lighting the stove in your room to providing a packed lunch for your day's sightseeing. Mepham Guest House is also ideally situated for you to visit the Lhodra Kharchu (monastery) just a 5 minute walk behind the property, something that previous guests have really enjoyed.

Our opinion: Much of the accommodation in the Bumthang valley is rather more basic that you will have experienced in western Bhutan. The Mepham Guest House is a great standard hotel and enjoys a fantastic location looking over the small town. Travellers to this part of Bhutan should expect to stay in more rustic accommodation and the Mepham Guest House is certainly representative of the best available within the standard accommodation category.

This new hotel is located just above the small town of Mongar. Due to its location the hotel enjoys great views across the valley and the town. It is just a short walk away from Mongar Dzong. Rooms are all modern and tastefully decorated. Facilities include a safe in each room, coffee and tea making facilities, a television and phone, there is also an internet connection at the hotel. The food here is great and on a warmer day there is a lovely terrace next to the dining room where you can take your meals with the stunning backdrop of the valley in the distance. Our opinion: A lovely hotel with a great location, ideally suited for a stroll around Mongar. Hotel Wangchuk is the best available in this remote part of eastern Bhutan.

The Druk Deothjung Hotel has an annex at Kydling, which is just above the main town of Trashigang (about a 15 minute walk away). This characterful building is set on a hill and has fantastic views over Trashigang Dzong and the valley. The 10 rooms are simple but delightful to stay in as the building itself is so beautiful. The rooms are set around a main courtyard that is decorated with flower pots and makes a lovely place to sit and relax in warmer weather. It is possible to dine inside or outside depending on the weather, the hotel also has a small gift shop.

The Kiranshree Portico is a smart modern hotel in the heart of Guwahati offering a high standard of

accommodation in clean, stylish and comfortable rooms. All the rooms are well equipped with air conditioning, TV, mini bar and tea & coffee making facilities. The main restaurant, the 'White Pearl' is a popular choice for the locals serving a wide range of Indian, Chinese and continental dishes. The hotel also has a mezzanine café, bar and internet facilities. Our opinion: Although the Kiranshree lacks

character, its modern rooms are probably the highest standard in Guwahati.

First Class

Located to the south of Connaught Circus in the heart of New Delhi and housing four restaurants, a swimming pool and a health club, Claridges is an excellent place to recharge your batteries and enjoy the colonial comforts. Authentic Chinese dishes can be enjoyed at Jade, Mediterranean at the outdoor Sevilla, and traditional highway cuisine in a rustic setting, reminiscent of a typical north Indian

roadside eatery at Dhaba. Pickwicks is open 24 hours for breakfast and multi-cuisine. Guests staying in Club Rooms have the opportunity to use a Club Lounge where breakfast may also be taken. Please note that the check-in time is 12:00. Early check-in is subject to availability.

Our opinion: With a range of facilities at your

fingertips, it's the ideal place to sit back and soak up the glories of a bygone era.
