t was 2009 and a revolution in the world of marketing was taking place. That revolution was Facebook. It made it possible for start-ups and smaller brands to market themselves in the same league as the big shots. Small brands could now put a word out about themselves for little or no money.

The first and most important thing is to obviously have a Facebook page. Since Mal and I had started Alma Mater, all our friends would obviously join our page and that would help us get others to join our page as well. For example, Vikram, a friend of mine joined the Alma Mater page. The fact that Vikram joined my page would show up on all his friends’ news feed. If Vikram had five hundred friends on FB, a lot of them would come to know that he had joined our page. Seeing this, some of his friends will then join our page and the process would repeat with other people as well.

Facebook was not only becoming a new means of marketing, it was becoming the future of marketing.

If I were to make it simpler—till now there was no possible way of saying anything wrong about a brand or a company. Sure you didn’t like a burger at McDonalds or the service at KFC, you could tell you friends about it or write to the papers. That’s it. A very crucial example that illustrates this point is: Some time back, a couple of Domino’s employees posted a video of themselves contaminating pizzas at a local Domino’s outlet.

The video was uploaded on Youtube and went viral and got a crazy number of views.

The brand faced a lot of criticism and it could have led to something bigger. But Domino’s had a huge FB presence which restricted the damage to a huge extent. An immediate video was posted using the response feature on Youtube which got an equal number of views and that quickly suppressed the situation. Had Domino’s not had any Facebook, Twitter or Youtube presence, we can only wonder what that would have done to the brand.

Similarly, a leading lock-making firm in China considered themselves too big for social media. A few bloggers posted how their locks could be opened with just a ball point pen. With no presence whatsoever on Facebook or Twitter, word quickly spread and the company was brought to its knees. I think every one of their employees is now on Facebook after that.

It’s not just the big brands but smaller brands too which can benefit from Facebook.

You can market anything you want, quickly spread the word about your brand and do a lot more at no cost at all. I think starting a business has become easier than ever before. I know a friend of mine whose mother used to make these delicious homemade

chocolates. I told her it’s extremely important to get the word out on FB. After setting up and managing her page, her mother has quadrupled her sales all in two months.

So, for an internet business like Alma Mater there was only one thing to do. And that was Facebook. And you know what the best part is? It’s FREE.

Now when you’re starting a Facebook page, there are two very important things that can help viral your brand name. Images and Videos. Everyone loves seeing pictures and everyone loves watching videos. If you can make this the core of your page the numbers will automatically come.

We already had some awesome looking hoodies, what we needed now were a bunch of pretty girls to pose in them. Everyone loves seeing pictures of pretty girls including girls themselves. I was already an avid photographer so it was time to start making some calls and arranging for the Alma Mater models.

So I called my friends, who called their friends and eventually we were able to get a lot of pretty girls to pose for our hoodies. What was amazing was the fact that the girls were actually really excited about posing because they thought of us as a cool brand.

And also the fact that I was one awesome photographer and we gave them free hoodies.

While I really love taking photographs, it gets a bit interesting when it comes to clicking girls.

1) ‘OMG, Varun, no. Have you seen me in pics, ya? I’ll ruin all your shots.’

So firstly, the girls insist that they are not pretty enough or photogenic enough for the photographs. You have to move mountains to convince them otherwise they wouldn’t budge.

2) ‘Yuck. I look sooo bad in this one. You can’t put this up.’

The second major hurdle is that they are never, ever satisfied with any of the photographs. Words like ‘yuckk’, ‘chee’, ‘barf ’ are used generously. No matter how well the shot has come out, a single line seems to speak for all of them—‘I look so fat in this one.’

3) ‘Okay, I wanna see how I look ya.’

A really popular problem. They have to see each shot after it’s taken. Come rain, hail, snow or whatever, they have to see the photo. Once they do please refer to the point above.

4) ‘Okay, you have to send me the pics before putting them up.’

So once they are sent, there’s usually a common reply. Again, refer to point number 2.

Finally, you have no choice but to upload the photographs, right? Once they do get

So by 22 November we had this awesome collection of photographs of guys and girls

posing with our hoodies and tees. The latter being the majority. The interesting thing was these were ex-students of the school for which they had posed, a fact which would help us greatly on Facebook later on. I mailed Seema all the pictures we had taken and she arranged them on our website in a beautiful way. If our website looked good till now, with all those product shots it looked even better.
