The aim of this research was achieved, which was to explore and describe the experiences of fourth-year college students at a public nursing college of the Eastern Cape, South Africa regarding the mentoring role of registered nurses in the clinical learning environment.

The exploration and description of nursing students‟ experiences was an eye opener to the registered nurses, lecturers, nursing services and Department of Health regarding negative mentoring experiences. The findings of the study and conclusions drawn from it emphasise that mentor-mentee relationships including registered nurses, lecturers and student nurses are fundamental to the mentoring process as signified by Tshabalala (2011:65).
