Services: A regional educational agency that serves as a bridge between local school districts and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the BCIU is committed to serving the needs of the students within the school districts, charter schools, and nonpublic schools in Bucks County.
It provides services by assisting schools in staff development, educational technology, and curriculum development; complementing educational programs such as preschool, special needs, gifted education, and adult learning; and consolidating resources to gain economies for local school districts and communities.
Within the BCIUʼs special education programs, transition services are offered in accordance with federal and state mandates. Activities available include, but are not limited to, vocational assessment and guidance, vocational training, work experience, supported employment, development of independent living skills, community-based instruction, and exploration of post-secondary employment, education and/or training options. Parents are a necessary and valuable part of the transition process and their participation is strongly encouraged. Each studentʼs IEP conference will include discussion about transition planning beginning at age 14.
The IU offers school districts information and staff development opportunities regarding transition through I.D.E.A. monies. Consultation and training is available in topics such as IEPs involving transition, curriculum development, postsecondary and school-based objectives, the roles of community agencies, job development and placement, supported employment, preparing students for postsecondary education and/or training, and financial issues and benefits, among others.
