Justification for request
The Biological Sciences Department at Missouri S&T is proposing to expand our program offerings by adding a new emphasis area to our BS degree that will provide students with a path to board certification to work as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. There is strong workforce demand for medical lab scientists to work in hospital settings across the state. The only way that a person can work as a medical lab scientist is if they have completed clinical training in a program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS), allowing them to become certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. There are several such accredited clinical training programs around Missouri, including Mercy in St. Louis and Joplin, Cox Health in Springfield, and North Kansas City Hospital. The demand for certified medical laboratory scientists is so high that these students who graduate and become MLS certified are virtually guaranteed jobs in their field.
These accredited clinical programs are dependent on a pipeline of qualified student applicants from partnering affiliated university BS programs. Students complete three years of course work in a BS program during which they satisfy clinical program prerequisites. Then they enter a clinical program where they complete additional coursework and clinical rotations for one year after which they receive their BS degree from their home institution and are eligible to take the national certification exam. All of the clinical programs maintain affiliation agreements with multiple universities. It is vital that they
maintain multiple agreements in order to insure a pipeline of highly qualified applicants to their clinical programs. During the development of this emphasis area proposal, we have reached out to multiple accredited clinical programs and all are interested in pursuing affiliations with Missouri S&T, so they can have access to our students. Once we obtain approval for our 3+1 MLS emphasis area, we intend to pursue affiliation agreements with as many clinical programs in Missouri as are available. This will place the Biological Sciences Program at Missouri S&T on par with similar programs at most other universities, and will place a path to MLS certification in the rural south central region of Missouri, where no such program currently exists.

Mobile Business and Digital Transformation Technology
Interest in the use of mobile technology and digital transformation among organizations has seen a strong, upward trend over the past few years. Indeed, many organizations now have Chief Digital Officers, whose role differs from the Chief Information Officer. The CDO's role is principally centered around positioning the organization to leverage emerging technologies, in contrast to the CIO's role of supporting existing technologies.
The proliferation of smart phone and tablet devices has presented organizations with new challenges creating and developing a coherent strategy associated with this newinnovation. In order to create this strategy, organizations will need an understanding of the mobile industry in general and specific technologies supporting thetrend.People capable of creating and maintaining digital mobile technology strategies are needed.
This certificate is designed to cover managing emerging technologies. This certificate is designed to cover the mobile industry as well as the technologies, devices, operating systems, user interface design, and tools of mobileapplications. The focus will be on allowing the mobile industry and technologies that allow an organization to make decisions in this dynamic domain.
A student admitted to this graduate certificate must complete four courses:
IS&T 6335 Mobile Technology for Business
Three courses from the following list:
