MATH-011A Units: 5

This is the first course in the algebra sequence in preparation for college-level mathematics. Topics include: operations on signed numbers and on polynomical and rational expressions; methods for the solution of linear, quadratic and rational equations, and linear inequalities. The solution of word problems by algebraic formulation is integrated throughout the course. Optional topics may include methods for solving systems of linear equations and roots and radicals. This 5-unit version of basic algebra is designed for students who have never before

satisfactorily completed an algebra course. Only three units are applicable toward the associate degree. Completion with a grade “C” or better fulfills the

mathematics competency requirement for the AS degree.

MATH-013 Units: 5

This course continues the Algebra sequence and is a prerequisite to college level math courses. It is required of students planning to transfer to CSU or UC systems. Intermediate Algebra reviews the first course in algebra and explores more deeply the real number system, properties of algebraic systems, absolute value in equations and inequalities, complex numbers, properties of rational exponents and logarithms, roots and radicals, functions, and inverse functions. Content may include determinants, Cramer's rule, matrices, simultaneous solutions of sets of equations, sequences and series, or conic sections.
