Moscow 2012

Vishy Anand Boris Gelfand

5Vt:Jd5 ld:g5 58.b5 f5?!

Gelfand keeps making good moves, but fails to find an immediate way to resolve the tension.

Here 58 ... d3! would have instantly forced the draw, using a small tactic to attack the bS-pawn.

59.J::!.h6 .iilg4 60Ji:f6

60.llh7+ '<t>b8 6l.tbb4 was a more direct try, but Black defends easily with 6l...f3!, transferring the bishop to the long diagonal.

f3 63.l:tg7+ b8 64.tt:lc3 b7 65.c4 .iilf3 66.Wb4 .iild5 6Vt:Ja4

Vishy's attempt is starting to take shape. He wants his king on aS, his knight on cS and the pawn on b6, set

ting up mating nets for the black king.

67 •.. .l:!.f7 68.J:i:g5 iilf3 69.tt:lc5 c7 70.J::!.g6

70 ..• d8

Logically, Gelfand runs for safety, but

it would actually have been simpler to give White what he wanted.

After 70 ... b7! 7l.b6+ b8 72.l:!.g8+

c8 White has reached his best posi

tion, but he has no way to make the slightest progress, as Black has an impregnable fortress.

71.a5

71 ... J::!.f5??

Played with just under a minute on the clock, and despite being (briefly) the top move of the engines, the los

ing mistake. 71...hl or something similar holds. Vishy had three m in

utes left, but took just seconds to play the decisive:

72.tt:le6+! c8 73.tt:ld4! J:i:f8 74.

tt:lxf3 l:i:xf3 75.cJiJb6!

Exploiting the fact that Black's king is on c8, White combines the threat of llg8+ with penetration on a7. Black can only defend against one of the threats.

75 ... .!:i.f8 would have been the way to draw if the black king had been on b8: 76.'<t>a7 .l:!.£7+ 77.a8! (77.a6 l:If8 78.!:i.b6 also wins) 77 ... llfl 78.

ing the rook from the defence of the pawn and transferring it to the c-file decides.

76.J::!.g8+ cJiJd7 77 .J::!.b8

And as there is no defence to a7, fol

lowed by b6, Gelfand resigned.

The last decisive game in the match, but the adventures were not exactly over. However, Vishy held on to his lead and retained his title, becoming the first player since Lasker to have won World Championship matches against four different opponents.

Quite interestingly, Garry Kasparov was the main critic of Vishy's play in this World Championship match.

Interesting in the sense that what Vishy managed to do was to avoid repeating Kasparov's mistakes! Like Vishy, Kasparov won matches in spectacular attacking fashion or by a decisive last-game victory. But fac

ing an opponent who clearly found a strategy to avoid the champion from showing his best, I think Moscow 2012 showed a better approach than London 2000. Not letting your frus

tration get the better of you, but fight

ing back. •

T

he day after he successfully defended his title, all Vishy Anand's time was claimed by a minute

to-minute schedule. Television inter

views, calls from home, a lengthy final press conference and an evening reception at the residence of the Indian ambassador to Russia seamlessly fol

lowed each other. A good part of the daytime was filled with an unex

pected highlight, a visit, together with Boris Gelfand, to Russian president Vladimir Putin in his residence in the

woods outside of Moscow.

It's the first thing we talk about when we meet the next day on the seventh floor of the Baltschug Kempinsky Hotel in the suite that served as the 'control room' of his seconds. Dressed in a casual shirt, ditto pants and

slip-said. He spoke a lot with Boris about Belarus and the chess scene: Anand's eyes sparkle as he recounts a funny part of their conversation. 'I told him that I grew up playing in a chess club which was hosted by the Soviet cul

tural centre and he said, so you are a problem that we created for ourselves:

Let's return to the match. What was
