1.7c. A concise statement or chart concerning the headcount and FTE of non-faculty, non- student personnel (administration and staff) who support the program.

The MPH program operates within the organizational structure of the Health Science and Recreation Department. The Department is allocated .50 FTE for the Chair. The department is allocated two full-time Administrative Support Coordinators on a 12-month basis. One

Administrative Support Coordinator position includes 0.25 FTE that directly supports the self- support distance format. These positions are assisted by student assistants who work approximately 15-20 hours per week. Although these positions are primarily responsible to support the Chair and the department overall, the MPH program negotiates dedicated time from the assistants for

coordinating MPH admissions applications and files, maintaining MPH program records, and process program data needs. The distance format is also supported by two staff members who provide year-round technology training and program support to distance faculty and students.

The hours fluctuate monthly, dependent on the distance related activities occurring at different times of the year. Therefore, payments are not on a fixed monthly basis. Analysis of timesheets provides an approximate FTE.

1.7.d. Description of the space available to the program for various purposes (offices, classrooms, common space for student use, etc.), by location.

The Department of Health Science and Recreation is located in MacQuarrie Hall. This is an

excellent campus location – near a large parking structure, the Event Center, the Associated Student House, and recreational facilities (e.g., the Aquatic Center, gym, and Aerobics Studio). It is also a short walk through the landscaped pedestrian campus to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, the Academic Success Center, the Student Union, and the Student Health Center. The Graduate Studies

and Research Office and other campus administrative offices are across the street from the main campus.

The Health Science and Recreation Department is located in MacQuarrie Hall with most offices located on the fourth and fifth floors. The Department Office, including the office of the Interim Chair, and approximately half of MPH faculty offices are on the fourth floor. Remaining MPH faculty have offices on the fifth floor, and part time faculty have office space on the third floor. All faculty, except the Interim Chair, share two person offices per CSU policy.

SJSU currently has 101 Smart Classrooms and 57 Enhanced Classrooms maintained by Classroom Technology Support. MPH courses are scheduled in Smart Classrooms or Enhanced Classrooms. Smart Classrooms include an LCDprojector of at least 3000 lumens, a DVD/VHS combo player, and a Smart Panel to turn the projector on and off, with switch sources to the projector to adjust volume, a VGA cable to connect a computer to the projector, and a Catlinc with Ethernet to allow remote monitoring. Enhanced Classrooms include an LCD projector of at least 3000 lumens, a pixie controller which controls basic functions (on /off, volume, etc.), and a VGA cable to connect a computer to the projector. In addition, MPH course instructors may request rooms with

moveable chairs, work tables, chalk boards, or white boards.

The MPH program is able to schedule courses in the College Computer Lab, which has 24 computer workstations and can accommodate up to 45 students working in teams. Students may use the lab when no class is scheduled. Two MPH courses, HS 277 and HS 269, were among a small number of carefully selected courses that were approved to use the new Incubator Classroom. The Incubator Classroom is a state-of-the-art digital communications laboratory that enables

professors to experiment with flexible learning environments and technology tools designed to enhance faculty-student interaction, encourage active learning, and increase student involvement. Faculty and students utilize a variety of technologies which transform the learning space by promoting increased collaboration and which has the capacity to record class work for future reference.

Most advising and small group meetings are held in faculty offices. The new CASA Student Success Center located on the fifth floor of MacQuarrie Hall is also available for advising student groups. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Library offers access to meeting and study group rooms. Within MacQuarrie Hall, Health Science and Recreation students and faculty have access to a monitor display and three large bulletin boards for posting announcements and showcasing student/faculty accomplishments.

The department has access to two conference rooms in MacQuarrie Hall. Special events (e.g., Department Convocation, Advisory Group meetings, the Nyswander Lecture, New Student Orientation, MPH Reunion, Sexual Diversity Workshop, and International Health Week) are generally held in central campus facilities, such as the Library, Student Union, Engineering, or large auditoriums. The MPH Student Association can reserve rooms accommodating 25 – 750 at

reasonable cost through the Student Union. For meetings or special events, the department has access to Spartan Catering, which provides convenient and customized refreshments and meal service at competitive prices.
