PHED 1220 Introduction to Sports Management 3 Credits

This course will introduce students to the rapidly growing sports management industry. Students will review the historical perspective to understand the foundation and definitions used in current day management. Discussions and review of the training, duties and tasks performed will provide students with basic competencies necessary for a career in sports management.

This is an introductory course designed to give the student the skills and knowledge necessary for assisting in the care and operation of a dog team. The course includes lecture and field work in dogsledding history, equipment, and technique. Dog training, care and medical treatment, and issues relating to racing and freight dogsledding will be addressed. Dogsledding trip included.

This aerobic exercise program combines the benefits of a good workout with the opportunity for learning techniques to plan an individual fitness program. The class is designed for men and women and includes exercises in toning, stretching, low and high impact aerobic moves and discussion of the principles of fitness and safety in exercise.

Designed for both the beginner as well as the advanced competitive runner, Running for Fitness combines the benefits of a good workout with the opportunity for learning techniques to plan an individual running program. The goal is better cardiovascular fitness, but individual goals, such as weight loss or improved competitive performance, will vary for each student.

This course provides basic skills for lifelong participation in snowboarding. This course will begin at the non-snowboarding level and progress through parallel turns. The course will meet at Giants Ridge Ski Resort, one day a week for eight weeks.

Explore fundamentals of shotgun sports as a life skill. Topics include equipment, safety, shooting fundamentals, shotgun games, etiquette, rules, and scoring. This course will present topics within this area that include personal, civic, and ethical values. Activities include required shooting range experience with trap, skeet, and sporting clays.

Golf Skills will introduce students to the game of golf. This is a course to introduce and improve golf skills. This intermediate course in rock climbing focuses on top rope climbing, belay escapes, anchor placement, knots, technical equipment information, and various rescues. This course is suited to the professional providing rock climbing experiences and to the recreational climber who is seeking a fuller understanding of the sport. Weekend climbing sessions are required.

Prerequisite: PHED 1441 Rock Climbing I or instructor approval based on previous rock climbing experience.

This course is an introduction to outdoor recreational pursuits in the Ely area. Activities vary, but may include canoeing, hiking and mountain biking.

This is a field-oriented course designed to give students the experience and skills necessary to travel in backcountry situations. Map, compass, and GPS navigation, Leave No Trace ethics, backcountry travel preparation and safety, and competitive orienteering will be addressed.

This course is designed to provide students with basic knowledge in the safe and efficient use of mountain bikes for off-road or trail transportation. Topics will include riding skills, safety, history and development, maintenance, and equipment.

This course provides instruction divided between pool and classroom work. Pool work will involve learning and practicing skills needed to become a safe, competent diver.

PHED 1455 Lifeguarding 1-2 Credits

This class prepares participants to work as Lifeguards, and includes Community First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer components. Ability to swim basic strokes is required. Use of equipment, prevention of accidents, responsibilities and duties of a lifeguard are included in the course. Students currently certified in Vermilion’s CPR/First Aid Certification would take the 1 credit lab option. Recommended entry skills and knowledge include: Ability to swim 500 yards using front crawl, and breaststroke; Ability to retrieve a brick from 7 feet of water; Reasonable ability to complete required skills by the end of the course; Red Cross minimum age limit for certification is 15.

This course covers methods and techniques needed to teach infant swim programs, basic progressive swimming classes and simple rescue classes. Good swimming and communication skills are recommended.

PHED 1457 Sea Kayaking 1 Credit

This introductory course will cover flat water kayaking skills (strokes, rolling, etc.) and will include discussions of various weather and water conditions. Students are expected to participate in classroom and open water field trips or overnight outings are planned. This course is offered through cooperative arrangement with Voyageur Outward Bound School, it is recommended that a student have intermediate swimming ability.

This course reveals the historic and cultural perspective of the Voyageurs who traveled the northern wilderness. To develop a full appreciation of the voyageur experience, students will participate in an authentic overnight wilderness camping experience in a replica voyageur canoe.

PHED 1467 Beginning Downhill Skiing 1 Credit

This class will present basic skills needed for lifelong participation in skiing. This class will begin at the non-skier level and progress through the basic skills of balance, rotary, edging, pressure skills, and wedge and parallel turns. The language of ski safety will also be discussed. The course will be divided into ability levels as needed. The course will meet at Giants Ridge Ski Resort, one day a week for eight weeks.

PHED 1468 Intermediate Downhill Skiing 1 Credit

This course will present basic skills needed for lifelong participation in skiing. This course focuses on advanced skills and techniques of downhill skiing. Technique and skill development in traversing, turning, speed control, and stopping will be included. This course is geared to those with skiing experience, with students having mastered beginning skiing skills. The course will meet at Giants Ridge Ski Resort, one day a week for eight weeks.

PHED 2210 Event/Festival Planning 3 Credits

This course will help the student plan an event/festival and target the appropriate geographic markets and demographic segments that would possibly attend the event/festival. The course addresses positioning events in the minds of potential participants and how to convey the marketing messages that invite and motivate attendance

using promotions, public relations, mailings, sponsorships and advertising tools.

PHED 2220 Internship in Sports Management Practices 3 Credits

This course is designed to provide students in the sports management program with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned in a real life job environment. Students will learn to work and assist in an environment while applying a variety of communication and time management skills. Internship positions must be in some part of the sports management industry and approved by the program coordinator. This course can be completed concurrently with the fall, spring or summer semester courses.

PHYS 1555 Fundamentals of College Physics 4 Credits

The course provides the student with a working knowledge of some of the basic laws and principles of physics, their historic development and how they apply to everyday life.
