Once again, this imposes a detour via the complete cycle of extrinsic determina- bility. Only then will we be able to establish that it is in ‘turning back’ into a diagrammatic function that the expressive function energetically charges itself, putting into circulation Sign-particles (Sp) at the point Pc (Figure 6.8).
existential refrains
The first refrains given as examples – faciality, signatures, emblems – did not sufficiently clarify the fact that they are established at the junction of two existential and diagrammatic functions or, in other words, that processual,
active, aspects, imported via diagrammatic determination f(diag) could come to be added to the passive, ‘hysterical’ aspects of existential grasping f(exi). However, refrains of a ‘psy’ origin would show us the two states in which they are led to manifest themselves in a more suggestive way. Their symptomatic insistence through obsessive rituals or systematized delirium, for example, always presents two faces:

M one of the partial recomposition, made in any old way, of a more
or less damaged existential Territory;
M
M the other of a processual nucleus, a line of flight, a ‘fugue of sense’,
charged with a desire which, although neurotic-psychotic, is nonetheless intense and authentic.
In a general way, two states of the refrain can be distinguished:
M
M An atonic state, where it carries out a simple existential indexing
and autonomization of a discursive residue that has become a dead memory, the witness-remnant of an old modular tension m-f which no longer has any other function than that of designating the being-previously-there of the pole Sts of the defunct modular

M An excited state where it additionally puts to use the surplus values
of possibility δ˝ ‘conveyed’ by f(diag) within modular striations, by bringing about original morpho-genetic catalyses, which could never have been imposed on them without its intervention (Figure 6.10). The differential zone δ´proper to the atonic state of the refrain (Figure 6.9) represented an infinitesimal cracking intrinsic to the module. It

was just enough to break the tension m-f. In contrast, the difference δ˝ in the excited state (Figure 6.10) that results from the introduction of an infinitesimal slipping of the extrinsic point of view, which origi- nates in f(diag), entails entirely different consequences. It is effectively the bearer of a positive determinability d+∞ twinned with a negative
determinability d–∞ that constitutes as if a charge of a free and virtual
valence of enunciative rearrangement. This time things get serious: the old modular structure is not only constrained to exit its dead autonomy but is constrained to open up to other enunciative Assemblages (Te). The refrain thus constitutes a sort of selector of choices, an option machine, for the treatment of the bifurcations around which the degrees of freedom of a system, the aleatory putting on hold of the enacting of heterogeneous components, will play…The different figures of the Assemblage with regard to charges of possibility are sketched out at this ethico-micro-political junction:

That is how I conceive the ‘function’ of the forgetting, slips of the tongue, oneiric gesticulations, etc. that were the fortune of the ‘savage horde’ of psychoanalysis. It is also the principal legacy of the Dadaists and Surrealists, with their technical utilization of aleatory caesura and their recourse to objective chance in their

montages, collages, etc. To my mind, all these psychoanalytic and aesthetic operations flow from an active utilization of existential refrains. These practices of putting into refrain don’t just shake up encysted references and certainties. They indicate the potential lines of a many-headed fractalization, a multidirectional and transversalist fractalization that can carry its effects to the heart of fundamentally heterogeneous domains.

Later we will encounter another essential avatar of the refrain, in the form of concrete machines. But we will only be able to deal with them after having tackled the questions of the striation of Phyla and of the smoothing of Universes, because they result from a requalification – one more requali- fication – of this same junction zone, brought about on the basis of these two operations proper to deterritorialized domains.
That a practice of existential refrains is possible, that one is not neces- sarily condemned to remaining passive in the face of their springing up (an attitude arising from a general function of capitalistic-monotheism) is something that the ritual procedures of ‘animist’ societies in particular teach us. It is also what psychoanalysis missed somewhat: initially, with

its overly energistic propping of unconscious complexes, then with its overly structuralist approach via part objects (which it would be better to call partialized, fractalized object-refrains). Equally a possible practice of institutional objects: in this domain, if one wants to escape from the weight of bureaucracy, Statist entropy, all the cogs are to be worked, artifi- cialized, ‘baroquized’. Taking into account the repetition-refrain, which insists for no reason, gets in the way of the ‘normal’ order of things and is synonymous with the casting off of paradigmatic moorings of techno- science, and a re-mooring to social and analytical practices on the side of ethico-aesthetic paradigms, the programme for an analysis of refrains, a refrain-analysis could be productive of a different subjectivity, other enunciative modalities that dis-pose existence differently.
