2.2. Aplicación parcial del procedimiento

2.2.1. Fase I Inicio

On the basis of the current study, several recommendations for Gezondeboel in practise are desirable to take into account. First, it is recommended Gezondeboel adjusts the suggestions for improvement (Appendix J) and negative aspects (Table 14) in the current and new eMental Health programs. The most important features to implement are reminders, rewards (by using the Persuasive System Design Model), and an (online) coach to chat or talk with. After the adjustments have been made, further research is needed to confirm if the adjustments increase participants’ usage and effects.

Secondly, to achieve better implementation on the work floor, it is recommended to include all stakeholders (employees and employers) from the beginning of a development process, and evaluate multiple times during the development of new eMental Health programs. The CeHRes Roadmap can be of benefit. Besides, it is important to take into account the large diversity of employee characteristics (e.g. age, gender, organisation mentality, and sector) during the development to suit a large group of employees as well as possible.

Thirdly, it is recommended to make eMental Health programs more suitable for daily use, which can extend the time employees work on the programs. For example this can be done by the use of an App (for mobile phones or tablets) or on Social Media. Afterwards further research is needed to confirm whether this increases participants’ usage.

During the current study eight Gezondeboel programs were provided during the intervention. On one hand this could be too much, because every program could cause another effect. On the other hand this could be too little content to investigate, because normally Gezondeboel provides a large amount of features (e.g. chat group with peers, contact with a coach). Consequently, not all features Gezondeboel provides were evaluated. Therefore, the fourth recommendation is to evaluate all programs separately to examine the effects of each program in specific. After this is executed, it is recommended to investigate the effects of the total platform (all programs and features of Gezondeboel) to examine what

the effects of Gezondeboel are when the platform is provided the way it is normally offered to employees.

The fifth recommendation is to investigate how the coach feature can be best provided according to users’ preferences and privacy-issues of employees. Afterwards further research is needed to confirm whether this increases participants’ usage and effects.

The last recommendation is to start the conversation with employers to investigate their point of view about implementing Gezondeboel in their organizations. When employers are willing to take the responsibility in providing eMental Health programs to their employees, this can positively influence the implementation of Gezondeboel on the work floor.

Conclusion

This is a unique and valuable study, because it provides in-depth insight into employees’ usage and the effects of the eMental Health programs of Gezondeboel. Furthermore, this study provides insight into how employees appreciate the programs, and what can be improved to better implement eMental Health at work. Employees were enthusiastic about the study and curious about what eMental Health could bring them. However, less employees than planned made use of the Gezondeboel programs. The time (of employees who had started with the modules) that was spent on the programs weakened over time. As a result, almost none of the programs was fully completed. Nevertheless, employees positively appreciated Gezondeboel, and experienced multiple positive effects. The current study suggests with a lot of caution that the programs of Gezondeboel can positively improve the mental wellbeing of employees. Moreover, with a lot of caution it can be concluded that Gezondeboel can be used safely, since none of the participants experienced any harm. There was no significant effect on perceived stress, work engagement and self-efficacy. Gezondeboel seems most suitable for intrinsically motivated employees, who experience little mental complaints (at work) or for those who wants to prevent the development of mental complaints. Employees mentioned that the employer should be responsible for implementing and providing Gezondeboel. Gezondeboel is advised to take into account the suggestions for improvement of the current and new programs, in order to extend program usage. To improve the implementation of eMental Health programs at work, further research is recommended to investigate how employers think about providing the programs to their own employees. In addition, all these conclusions should be used with caution, since this study included a very small research group. Future research with a larger sample size is highly needed to confirm the results of the current study.

Appendix A. Information for participants about the research and participation

Beste werkende,
