Pushya nakshatra is supposed to be the most auspicious asterism am ongst all the constellations. All the negative effects or flaws of adverse combinations get neuterlised and assuaged under the influence of this nakshatras. With its

benefic nature, Pushy a nakshatra is capable of destroying evil effects of unfavourable com binations in the horoscop e. H ow ever, this n akshatra is not favou red for m arriage purposes. But the versatility and universal application of this nakshatra cannot be questioned, of course, leaving marraige apart. Mrigasira is highly praised for marriages.

Apart from favourable planetary configuration, the other essentiality for fixing an auspicious time or electing a favourable nmhurata is the blessings of suitable nakshatra. The selection of right nakshatra for a particular matter or cerem on y is done on the b asis of ch a ra c te ristic s and significations of such nakshatra, the details of which have been given in the foregoing parts. Since the beneficiary of a good muhurta is a person, it is necessary that the factors involved in the Muhurta cjiart should hold some kind of compatibility with the horoscope of the native. The two such important components are (a) ‘Tarabala’ or the strength of

nakshatra and (b) Chandrabala or the Lunar strength. (a) Tarabala (Strength of Nakshatra) :

In Muhurta Jyotish, Lunar nakshatras have been arranged into nine groups. Each group is known as specific "Tara" endowed with strength to show a particular effect. The

nakshatra in which the Moon is posited at the time of birth is called 'Janma nakshatra or 'b irth star'. The com patibility between the birth nakshatra and the ruling nakshatra of the election time is judged arithematically. Count from the birth

nakshatra to the one elected nakshatra for the Muhurta and divide the number by 9 if divisible otherwise keep the count unaltered. The remainder or unaltered figure, as the case may be, remains between 1 and 9. Certain connotations have been used for these 9 numbers which suggest the effect at each stage. These are illustrated in a tabular form as shown :

muhurata, it comes to number 11. Dividing it by 9, it leaves a remainder of 2, which according to the above table denotes

"Sam-pat" which indicates wealth and prosperity . Therefore, l his tarabala is very suitable. For the said native a table, in a form of ready reckoner, is drawn for instant checking of

If the muhurta's nakshatra falls in the 1st cycle, the evil effects of the 3rd, the 5th and the 7th Taras (Stars) i.e. Vipat,

78 Vedic astrologv in money matters

evil effects of these Taras in the 2nd cycle are fifty percent and these are confined to the 1st quarter of the 3rd, the 4th quarter of the 5th and the 3rd quarter of the 7th Tara. If the Nakshatra of the election muhurata falls in the 3rd cycle, the effect are quite negligible.

The results described in A tharva Vcdiya Jyotinlia in respect of the 9 Taras is stated below :

i) Jan m a T ara, 1st, 10th and 19th from Jтипа

N a k sh a tra :

It is stated that works undertaken during the influences of 1st tarn remain unfulfilled and ineffective

ii) S a m p a t - the 2nd Tara (2nd, 11th and 20th from Jan m a N a ksh a tra ):

This tarn bestows wealth in different forms and from various sources.

iii) V iptat - the 3rd T ara (3rd, 12th and 2'lst from Jan m a n a k sh a tra ) :

T h is T ara is su ita b le to u n d ertak e unscrupulous activities or cruel deeds.

iv) K sh em a - the 4th T ara (4th, 13th and 22nd from Jan m a n a k sh a tra ) :

This is an auspicious position. Any Muhurata under the influence of this Tara gives effect to good trading activities in property, vehicles etc. This Tara is also suitable for earning and accretion of wealth.

v) P ra ty a ra - the 5th T ara (5th, 14th and 23rd from Ja n m a n a k sh a tra )

vi) S a d h a k - the 6th T ara (6th, 15th and 24th from Ja n m a n aksh atra)

This tarn is taken as good and favourable to yield success in any pursuit commenced in this

vii) N aid h an a - the 7th T ara (7th, 16th and 25th from Ja n m a n aksh atra)

This Tara is very inauspicious. No travelling should be undertaken and no auspicious work or cerem onies are perform ed. .During the Moon's sajourns of these nakshatras, the native should avoid confrontations, particularly with the o p p o n en ts and they should never be trusted.

viii) M aitra - the 8th T ara (8th, 17th and 26th from Ja n m a n aksh atra)

This is also a greatly favourable and promising

tara and is suitable for doing auspicious works like marriage, partnership etc.

ix) P aram a M a itra , the 9th T ara (9th, 18th and 27th from Ja n m a n a k sh a tra )

This is considered, one of the best tarn in the whole gamut. Any work how much difficult or im p o ssib le , if co m m en ced u nd er the influence of this tnrn, it gets accomplished with much ease. Even most cherished desires of the native are fulfilled.

80 Vedic astrology in m oney matters

While examining the Tara Bain (nakshatra's strength), it is necessary lo know that the favourable Tarns are free from any affliction or vedha. The auspicious cerem onies are forbid d en w hen the co n cern ed Tara is u n d er m alefic in flu e n ce s. S im ila rly , the u n fa v o u ra b le T aras under afflictions show less harmful results or even good effects to some extents. The Moon endowed with shnkls paksha (bright half) should be given more weightage than the Moon of

krishna paksha (dark half).

b) C handra B a la (Lunar Strength) :

In vedic astrology, the M oon has assum ed greater im portance practically, in every field but in Electional A strology (m uhurta), the Moon and its p o sition in the

M uhurta chart is much more evident. The efforts should be made to avoid placement of .the Moon in the 6th, the 8th and the 12th position from the Jnnma Rasi in the elcctional chart.

If we further take on to the illustration cited in respect of tara bala, (Table :5) we find the Purva Phalguni being the ruling nakshatra at the time of the birth means that the Moon is in the sign Leo, while the nakshatra of muhurta is Uttar

A shada. to show th a t th e M oon is in S a g itta r iu s , if

nakshatra is in its 1st quarter. The Moon switches over to Capricorn sign when in the remaining three quarters of the Nakshatra (see Table :18). The Moon in Sagittarius sign falls in the 5th position, while in sign Capricorn, the muhurta's Moon goes over to the 6th place in the muhurta chart which is an inauspicious position. The suitable muhurta is on the day when the Moon is posited only in Leo sign so far as

Chandra bala (Lunar strength) is concerned. It may be noticed that a muhurta nakshatra though being harmoniously placed with reference to the Janma (birth) nakshatra, it is required to be avoided as not being compatible with Chandra bala. B esid es, certain n akshatras, w h ich o th erw ise are w ell disposed, have to be discarded due to their inherent evil

Propitious moments 81

qualities. Such as, Bharani nakshatra is rejected for all the auspicious works. This particular nakshatra is religiouslsy avoided even though it is well placcd with respect to the birth nakshatra.

At times, it becomes exceedingly necessary to undertake some work or ceremony which can not be postponed due to certain u navoid able circu m stances. U nfortunately, the

muhurata on that day is devoid of tara bala i.e., the day is possibly ruled by janma, Vipata, Pratyaka or Naidhana tarns. Under such an emergent situation , avoid 1st 7th, 3rd, 8th, 6th ghaties respectively and perform the function intended for. By doing this, the adverse and m alefic effects are mitigated. It should however, be remembered that this kind of recourse are resorted to, only when it is a must and can not be delaved.

4. Y o g a s :

Yoga in muhurta is confined to its meaning i.e., addition. Mere the longitudinal degrees of the luminaries, the Sun, the Moon are added up and then divided by 13 degrees and 20 minutes. Each such segment is called Yoga which are 27 in numbers. There names have been listed below :

If that part is avoided, the adverse effect of the yoga are reduced to a great extent and less potent period of the yogas is allowed for undertaking certain urgent work which could not otherwise, be avoided. But this should be used as a matter of exception and not as a rule. The table appended below would show the extent of the yoga that should be avoided under any circumstances.

(23 Hrs and 20 Mins = 1400 Mins; 1 hr. and 12 Min. = 72 Min;

The inauspicious portion is : 72 x 1400 = 70 = lhr.'lO Min. 1440

Therefore, the first 1 hr. and 10 Min. of this Yoga should be avoided.

5. K n ra n a (H a lf Lunar day) :

Karana is an one-half of a tithi or Lunar day. In other words, the longitudinal distance between the Sun and the Moon should be the multiple of 6 instead of 12 as in the case of tithi. The quotient indicates the number of knrnnas which have passed and the remainder is the part distance of the existing кагана. There are eleven knranas and out of which lour karanas are fixed one while the remaining seven are movable karanas.

The four fixed karanas are :

i) Shakuni, (ii) Chatuspada, (iii) Nagaan d ( iv ) Kintungha

The seven moveable Karanas are :

(i) Bava, (ii) Balava, (iii) Kaidava, (iv) Taitila, (v) Gara, (vi) Vanija and (vii) Vishti.

84 Vedic astrology in money m atters

The seven movable karanas come by rotation, eight times in a Lunar month commencing with the second half of the first Lunar day (bright half) i.e., (pratipada of the shukla

paksha). The four permanent or fixed karanas will occur in serial order, starting from the second half of the 29th Lunar day. That means that the first karana of the first Lunar day of the bright half commences with the 4th fixed karana viz.,

kintungha. Amongst these eleven karnas, the Vishti which is known as Bhadra is the most harmful and shall be avoided in all auspicious matters. The Table of karanas within tithies has been drawn to make it convenient for the readers to understand the arrangement of karanas.

Bhadra also prevails during the tenancy of Vishti karana m a Lunar day. This period is considered inauspicious for election (muhurta). In other words, Bhadra is co-terminus with Vishti Karana. Bhadra is considered auspicious for barter I ransactions, cooking, yagna, propitiation of Lord Shiva as it is said that bhadra took birth from the body of Lord Shiva. (> The A scendant (Lagna) :

W hile it is alw ays desirable to fix m uhurta that is auspicious from every point of view and compatible with astrological rules, but certain urgent engagem ents and decisions are required to be taken in an emergent situations which are not possible to be delayed and the time available is not astrologically propitious. There are a good number of

iloshas (evil moments) which are required to be avoided for • any auspicious work. H ow ever, the sages on one hand framed strict rules in a great numbers, on the other hand, they have provided many neutralising combinations which act as antidotes.

In urgent cases, if the Ascendant (lagna) is fortified, the evil effects or dosha are neutralised. The Ascendant is one of the im portant constituents of muhurta. At an extrem ely emergent situation or sudden juncture, some spot decisions are to be taken but adequate time is not available to fix a proper Muhurta, but if a right Ascendant (lagna) is picked up it nullifies much of the adverse effects caused by some weak limbs of Panchanga (Almanac) at that moment. Through
