Different systems of influence in the child’s world serve to influence the child’s development of ASB. Parenting is an important contributing influence the child’s development of ASB. Findings from this review indicate that certain parenting practices, such as parental warmth and parental monitoring can protect against the development of ASB’s. Parental warmth is such an important part of parenting that it

98

can safeguard against individual risk factors such as high CU traits in children. The implementation of effective parenting practices when the child is at an earlier developmental stage was also highlighted.

Ineffective parenting practices, in particular low parental warmth, harsh parental discipline, low parental monitoring, negative parenting styles, parental ASB and maternal depression have been linked to the etiology of ASB in children.

It is hoped that through the identification of these variables, this review contributed to the understanding of the role that parenting plays in the development of ASB.
