Description of Major _The Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science Education offers an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students for teaching careers in public or parochial schools. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science degree program have the option of concentrating in History or Political Science and upon graduation will receive full state certification
Major Requirements (History Concentration)
All students concentrating in history will complete a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours in the major. All majors must have at least a 2.50 GPA overall to qualify for graduation with a degree in the degree program. (Also, students must pass all classes except natural sciences with a grade of “C” or better). All education majors must pass the General Knowledge portion of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination. See your advisor for course sequences in mathematics, social science, humanities, statistics, and computers.

The following courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher. These courses may be taken as partial fulfillment of the General Education Requirements:

Foreign Language Requirement:
Transfer students are required to have completed two (2) years in high school or eight semester hours (or the equivalent) at an accredited undergraduate institution in one foreign language or American Sign Language prior to enrollment or graduation from the University.
Students majoring in social science (history) education will minor in secondary education.

Admission Requirements to Major Program of Study
Students must have a grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.50 or better in basic general education course component or a 2.50 G.P.A. from a completed baccalaureate program.
Students must have passed the General Knowledge of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE). Students must meet all “Gordon Rule” requirements. Students must have a grade of “C” or better in the
required courses taken as part of the General Education Preparation Program or an AA degree.
Students must successfully complete a criminal background check and a pre-admission interview by the College of Education Admissions Committee.

Prerequisite Policy
It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the prerequisites of a history course prior to enrollment in that course. A student may contact his or her advisor or department chair for additional information concerning course prerequisites and this policy. Failure to fulfill course prerequisites may result in the administrative cancellation of enrollment in the course at any time during the semester with no refund of tuition or fees
