In line with corporate citizenship principles, Hürriyet Newspaper has acted like an NGO upholding scientific and legal causes and conducted the “End Domestic Violence!” Campaign for the last seven years. As one of the best ever social responsibility initiatives launched in Turkey, the campaign has allowed Hürriyet to pursue a solution to a crucial problem in Turkey.

For seven years, the campaign has utilized media power to raise awareness of domestic violence through publications, international conferences, seminars and other activities, implemented sustainable projects and highlighted the fact that domestic violence is not “a family matter” but a social crime that needs to be openly discussed. It continued to be a force mobilizing various institutions for strategies for protection and prevention in 2010.

The first major events of the campaign in 2010 were the Fourth “End Domestic Violence!” Conference and the Güldünya Songs Concert on March 8, International Women’s Day.

The conference was inaugurated by Hürriyet Newspaper’s Chairperson, Vuslat Doğan Sabancı and the State Minister in Charge of Women and Family Affairs, Selma Aliye Kavaf was the event’s main speaker. Other speakers included officers from the United Nations Population Fund, the women’s shelter Mor Çatı, General Directorate from Social Services and the “End Domestic Violence!” Campaign, as well as experts from Turkey who have devoted themselves to this cause and pioneered international initiatives.

Hürriyet’s “End Domestic Violence!” Campaign had issued Güldünya Songs Album in 2008 featuring 13 famous female singers from Turkey. This time, on the night of the conference, Turkey’s prominent male voices also joined the concert to say “No to Violence!”

In the second Güldünya Concert entitled “Men Who Say ‘End Domestic Violence!’ Sing for Women” Kenan Doğulu, Teoman, Yüksek Sadakat, Yalın, Enbe Orkestrası, Mustafa Ceceli,

On November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the DVD and CD of the concert were released. The proceeds of the album continue to be transferred to the Domestic Violence Emergency Helpline.

Calls from 78 Provinces and 12 Countries to the Helpline

One of the most important pillars of Hürriyet’s “End Domestic Violence!” Campaign, the Domestic Violence Emergency Helpline, was established on October 15, 2007 with the support of the Istanbul Governorship and is Turkey’s only helpline to deliver services 24/7. In 2010, the helpline further expanded its influence and received a total of approximately 25,000 calls in three years, including 5,132 in just 2010 alone.

During 2010, 2,138 people received

psychological, institutional and legal support about domestic violence and information on the functioning of the helpline, the campaign and assistance to 2,138 people. Of these, 1,337 were victims or relatives and friends of victims. The helpline was initially established to

urgent cases and has saved more than 750 lives up to this point.

The experience of the Domestic Violence Emergency Helpline was published as a book covering the period from its inception in 2007 until 2010. In addition, the website www. aileicisiddeteson.com was upgraded.

Photography Contest for the Domestic Violence Campaign

In 2010, the “End Domestic Violence!” Campaign and the photo sharing website Fotopya jointly organized a photography contest focusing on domestic violence, also supported by the Turkish Federation for the Art of Photography. The contest was open to professional and amateur photographers and received thousands of images from across Turkey. The objective of the contest was to shed light on the modes of perception of domestic violence in the society. The first prize in the competition went to Emel Karakozak for her work “Violence,” the second prize went to Nevzat Yıldırım for his photograph “Mother and Fear” and the third prize to Volkan Yıldız for his “Violence Against Women.” The exhibition and the award ceremony took place in January 2011.

Soaring Participation to the Project

In 2010, many governorships across Turkey proposed training and collaboration projects to the “End Domestic Violence!” Campaign and the Domestic Violence Emergency Helpline, which employs psychologists and lawyers expert in this field. In this regard, a number of governorships held joint workshops with the State Ministry in Charge of Women and Family Affairs and its General Directorate for Social Services and Child Protection (SHÇEK). During the year, various training programs were organized in Yozgat, Antalya, Şanlıurfa, Trabzon, Erzincan and Mardin. Additionally, the 112 Emergency Call Center staff in Antalya and Isparta, which collaborate with the campaign and forensic doctors at the Izmir Forensic Medicine Congress, received training. The “End Domestic Violence!” Campaign continued to reach out to students in 2010. In this regard, senior year students from Izmit Anka High School and Beşiktaş Anatolian High School received training on domestic violence. The hosiery firm Penti Çorapları has been supporting the campaign for two years. Pro bono, Penti printed the logo of the Domestic Violence Emergency Helpline on the packaging

Campaign officers participated in the bimonthly meetings of the Istanbul Governorship’s Domestic Violence Commission in 2010 and submitted reports to the governorship prepared during the campaign. Campaign officers also attended Kadiköy Municipality’s Women Symposium, Izmit SHÇEK’s Domestic Violence Conference, National Action Plan Symposium on Domestic Violence Against Women organized by General Directorate for the Status of Women, WOMANist: International Istanbul Women’s Meeting and Söke Women’s Shelters Conference.

In line with feedback received at joint training programs organized in 33 provinces during the campaign, reports focusing on victims’ problems with various institutions, the challenges faced by these institutions while helping the victims and various solution proposals were prepared and sent to the concerned institutions such as Istanbul Governorship, Turkish National Police and SHÇEK. In addition, various TV programs gave their viewers information on the campaign and the helpline.
