A. Reading
Read the following Drama and answer the questions that follow : (Miss Vera sits in the drawing room. Mr.Nuttel, a young man enters.) Mr. Nuttel : May I come in?
Miss. Vera : Please do come in. Mr. Nuttel : m Framton Nuttel.
Miss. Vera : m Vera. Pleased to meet you.
Mr. Nuttel : Pleased to see you Miss Vera. Could I see Mrs. Sappleton? Miss. Vera : She ll come down very soon. Please have a seat.
Mr. Nuttel : Thank you. I m very ill. People say I m timid. Miss Vera : No, you aren t.
Mr. Nuttel : Doctors say I ve some nervous disorder. I asked them if they could cure me. Then they advised me to spend some time pleasantly at a village.
Miss Vera : And that s why you are here.
Mr. Nuttel : Exactly. By the by, I m going to see Mrs. Sappleton for the first time. Miss Vera : Then you don t know much about my aunt, do you?
Mr. Nuttel : No, I don t. I know only her name and address. Miss. Vera : Then, would you like to listen to her tragedy? Mr. Nuttel : Tragedy!
Miss. Vera : Do you know why we keep that window wide open? Mr. Nuttel : No, I don t.
Miss. Vera : Exactly three years ago, Mr. Sappleton went out through that window with his dog. He never came back.
Mr. Nuttel : What happened to him?
Miss. Vera : People say that he died in a bog. Even his body wasn t recovered. It s a sad story, isn t it?
Mr. Nuttel : Yes, it is.
Miss Vera : Poor aunt always thinks that her husband will come back. She told me a number of times how he would come back through the open window. Mr. Nuttel : Oh, I pity her.
Miss Vera : Sometimes I feel the same too. Mr. Nuttel : What do you mean?
Miss Vera : I too believe that Mr. Sappleton might come in through the window. You can find him in the photograph near the fireplace.
(She points to the photograph.)
Mr. Nuttel : (Looking at the photograph) For Heaven s sake, please don t tell me such fearful things. And doctors say ..
Mrs. Sappleton : m very sorry for keeping you waiting for so long. Mr. Nuttel! Mr. Nuttel : That s all right. I ve been talking to your niece.
Mrs. Sappleton : Vera has got a good sense of humour, hasn t she?
Mr. Nuttel : Yes, she has. Mrs. Sappleton, I m very ill and doctors say
Mrs. Sappleton : Mr. Nuttel! If 1 were you, 1 wouldn t think of my illness all the time. Your sister wrote to me about it. Don t worry. You ll soon be all right.
Mr. Nuttel : But doctors say .
Mrs. Sappleton : Mr. Nuttel! .... I hope you don t mind the open window.
Mr. Nuttel : But my doctors say that 1 shouldn t be excited about anything. Mrs. Sappleton : Oh, Mr. Nuttel! ... My husband will walk in through that window.
That s why I keep it open.
Mr Nuttel : (Placing his right hand on the chest, Nuttel says in a low voice) My God! I can t bear it any more.
Mrs. Sappleton : I beg your pardon? Mr. Nuttel : Nothing.
Mrs. Sappleton : (Looking out through the open window) Here he is at last!
(Nuttel becomes alert suddenly. He looks at Vera who is stiffened with fear and looks out of the window. Nuttel turns back and sees Mr.Sappleton coming in with his dog. Very much frightened, he runs out of the house seizing his hat.)
Mr. Sappleton : Here I am, my dear! Who the hell was that bony person that ran out as I came in?
Mrs. Sappleton : A very extraordinary man, a Mr. Nuttel. He was keen on talking about his illness all the time. Like an ignorant person, he dashed off without a word of good-bye. One would think that he had seen a ghost.
Miss Vera : I can explain. I think it was the dog that frightened him. He told me that he had a horror of dogs. He explained to me that he fell into a pit when some wild dogs had chased him. He said that he had to spend the whole night in it with the dogs barking at him. So he is now very much afraid of dogs.
(Mr. Sappleton exits.)
Mrs. Sappleton : Vera, I think you ve made up this story, haven t you?
Miss Vera : Yes, I ve. I admit that I ve made up another one for Mr. Nuttel a little while ago

II. Using going to to express the immediate present or the future. Read the following sentence taken from the text.
Mr. Nuttel : Exactly. By the by, I m going to see Mrs. Sappleton for the first time. Here going to is used to express an action in the immediate present.
Now look at some other examples:
1. Can t you hear that thunder? It is going to rain. Don t go out.
2. Look at this hole in the middle of the road. I m sure someone is going to fall into this. Here the underlined parts of the sentences talk about the actions that are going to happen in the immediate present or future. We use be form + going to + verb to predict from the context that something will happen in the immediate present or future.
