1. Starting with one of the colors you have chosen, make circles all over your paper. If you wish, you can make some of them dots (filled in circles). Any size is fine (fig. 1).

2. Wash out the brush and dry thoroughly. 3. Choose a second color and start

making new circles and dots on your paper. Fill in some of the first circles if you like or outline existing circles (fig. 2). 4. Continue the painting with the third

color. Paint in some of the background and outline circles you have already made (fig. 3).

5. Finally, use the white to outline circles, fill in circles, or fill in the background. If you already used white, use one of the remaining colors (fig. 4).

Think First: Circles are a natural, familiar shape for children. They (as well as adults) enjoy making them. Before beginning this lesson, you can ask the child to make circles in the air with one finger, then with their whole arm, and finally to make a circle with their hands stretched out spinning around in a circle. This lesson focuses on composition through art making, by way of the color, value, and subject of the painting being predetermined.

Tip: For the youngest child, make sure they can reach most of the paper from where they are standing. This may mean a smaller piece of paper.

Meet the Artist:

Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow and lived part of his life in Germany and then France. His work changed greatly during his life, and his work in abstract expressionism is most recognized. He used shapes—such as the circle—to express his inner life as an artist.
