SQUARES

Next to the Conjunction, the Square is the most powerful aspect between planets. Its dynamic influence exceeds that of all other aspects, and it surpasses even the Conjunction in stimulating human reaction. It is the aspect that denotes action and reaction at the most refined level. The planets involved are almost always in signs that are naturally hostile to each other.

Because of this fact there is little harmony, unless the individual reacts in a harmonious way to their combined influences. Positive human reaction is essential if there is to be any constructive effect.

The workings of the elements in the Square are analogous to the effects of fire and water. It is obvious that these two cannot occur simultaneously without adapting in some way.

Water can put out fire, or fire can reduce water to vapor. When both elements are handled judiciously, the results are constructive. Water can control fire and prevent a holocaust, while fire can heat water to produce energy as steam. A similar process takes place when two planets are separated by an angle of 90° in what is called a Square aspect.

The initial effect of a Square is to cause frustration when the psychological factors corresponding to either of the planets are involved. Some adjustment must be made before one can use the energies positively. This aspect shows that there are lessons to be learned about how to use the energies constructively; otherwise, negative effects are certain. The Square aspect presents a test which, when passed, builds character and infuses it with increasing perfection.

The greatest tests in life come through the Square aspects. They generally occur as crosses that must be borne in the struggle to gain mastery over the unconscious. They show the major crises that must be dealt with for the soul to evolve and grow toward greater self-conscious awareness.

The square from the Sun to the Moon means that you will have some difficulty in using your resources to satisfy your desires. You bitterly resent that you must make enormous adjustments in order to get what you want from life. It seems as if yon never have quite the right training for what you want to do, but you make only half-hearted attempts to acquire the training you need to succeed. Although you want the "good life," you aren't willing to discipline yourself to get it.
