ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
It is a truth mathematically provable, that as the number of people who deserve to be thanked increases, the probability that one of them will be forgotten rapidly approaches 100%. But let’s try to beat the odds!
Janneke, thank you, first of all, for offering me a place in your lab, and for your supervision
and advice over the last few years. Thank you also for everything you have taught me, by instruction or by example. I admire your knowledge about the work and the people in our field, and your ability to determine those questions that are not just important and unanswered, but ripe to be answered. I have learned many new skills and techniques under your guidance, and your dedicated feedback has made me a better writer and presenter. In addition to all this, you have an unmatched enthusiasm for science, your work and your students. When other people might have taken a step back, you kept at it and were always there for us. Resilience is your motto, and you certainly practice what you preach. I have greatly enjoyed working with you over the last years, and I’m glad we’ll continue to do so for a while longer.
Wei Ji & Mike, all those probability distributions would have stayed hidden within the
brains of our participants, never to be decoded, had it not been for our collaboration. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your time, and for your (often short-notice) feedback on manuscripts and other submissions. I have learned a great deal from you both.
Wyeth, although it wasn’t very long, my time in your lab and our collaboration
afterwards were very formative for me. I really appreciated your patience and precision of thinking, regularly sitting down with me for hours to walk through every detail of some computation or algorithm. If nothing else, I’ll never forget that a Gaussian in the spatial domain is a Gaussian in the Fourier domain!
Frans, some important seeds for my subsequent academic life were sown during your
course on perception at UCU. Not only was this my first proper introduction to the field of visual neuroscience, but your personal encouragement pushed me to pursue a Master’s degree abroad, and thus played a great role in bringing me where I am today. I would like to thank all past and present members and affiliates of the Visual
Computation Group, for the scientific discussions we’ve had over the years, and the
feedback and advice you gave me. In order of appearance (I think), thank you Sam,
Sander, Rosanne, Tim, Klaudia, Jasper, Sri, Koen, Ilona (on iPad ;-) ), Joachim, Denise, Andrea, Juraj, Laura and Andrey!
Many of my Wednesday evenings were spent not knowing the answers to trivia questions. Thankfully my team mates from Rank Deficient were there to offset this ignorance, so much so that we eventually gathered many trophies of disgusting booze (much like a real trophy, Apfelkorn is best left on a shelf to look at, and never consumed). When we were full rank, our numbers included Sean, Tom, René, Ruud, Richard and
Flora!
While Wednesdays were for quizzing, Fridays were for FADding, some Dagjes were Uit, and all days were Donders-days. This is where the acknowledgements-theorem from before is most likely to show through, because there were so very many of you, but thank you for being Social Donderians, Lennart, Inge, Eelco, Verena, Tom, Iske,
Sander, Alex, Jeanette, Winke, Anke Marit, Loek, the two Suzannes, the two Eelkes, Miriam, Mirjam, René, Vincent, Lisa, Sasha, Ruud, Annelies, Richard, Nietzsche, Tim, Jo, Jeff, Ashley, Bronagh, the two Dans, Merel, Joost, Roemer, Sybrine, Frank, Stephen, Matthias, Tobias, Lorijn, Linda, Marlieke, Lieneke, Ian, Isabella, Hanneke,
the two Peters, Elexa, Pim, Ricarda, Gwilym, Joost, Alina and Mariska! And special thanks of course to Sean, the FAD’s official MC and poetry slammer!
As many of you know, when I’m not drinking to forget them, I like to run away from my problems. Sometimes other people ran with me, exploring the course of an upcoming race (7 Hills, Molenhoeks Makkie) or just because they were on the same lfcdc mailing list. Thank you Eelco, Arjen, Lauren, Tim, Jeanette and Stephen!
Fewer people know that I produced a child early on in my Donders career. A girl with two fathers, she was named DoReti and she likes to draw colorful maps on inflated cortical surfaces. Sander, I know you have a real boy of your own now, but let’s face it, the first one is always more special ;-).
0.90, 2.272 and 2.217. These numbers have special significance because they marked the offices where I spent so much of my time in the last years. The DCCN random number generator, in its ineffable wisdom, allocated the perfect people for me to share these spaces with. Thank you Winke, Vincent, Iske, Anna, Ruud, Claudia, Anke, Joost and
Emily, for being such great office mates!
My experiments would not have been possible without the technical support of the DCCN’s Technical Group: Erik, Marek and his minions, Mike, Uriel, Jessica, Edward and Hong. Thanks in particular to Paul for running a tight ship down in his Pleasure

Palace, and for answering his home phone when a scanner would act up during the weekend. Thanks also to everyone who keeps the DCCN running smoothly, including
Berend, Tildie, Nicole, Sandra, Ayse, Chantal, Paula, Susanne & Lucia.
Rauischholzhausen crew, I wish there were a way for us to go back to that German
castle for a week every year, to relive those heady days of vision science, uphill football, downhill football, nerdy discussions, impromptu renditions of Hey Jude and other classics, scavenging for decorative strawberries as the only available fruit to ward off scurvy, fountain-swimming, and the occasional drink (just the one). Barring that, I guess we’ll all just have to stay in science so we can catch up at conferences. In order of appearance on the T-shirt, here’s to you Antonio, Jing, Ben, Joao, Jarrod, Rob, Surya,
Will, Hannah, Becky, Joan, Dun, Susann, Jorrit, Rebecca, Vivian, Sonia, Anna, Cheng, Rosanne, Brendan, Nick, Ulf, Manuel, Kate, Linus, Chris, Bianca, Andi and Shay! Cork gang, I’m glad we’ve stayed in touch over the years! It was always great to escape
my PhD stress by reminiscing with you about the good times when we visited Dingle, listened to live Irish music in Sin É, ate tuna-pasta before Irish Culture evening classes, saved Ivanka from the flood, or drank Beamish (with or without blackcurrant syrup) at the Bróg. Marvin, Annemiek, Jacqueline & Ivanka: go raibh maith agat!
George, Thijs & Lorraine, not only are you 75% of my paranymphs; you also played a
huge part in me having a life outside of my PhD. Whether we were flipping cups, hero- ing guitars, finding out who killed a guy at the Bourbon Jazz club, or escaping from the Beurs van Berlage, hanging out with you was always a surefire way to have a blast, to laugh a lot, and to forget about p-values or reviewer comments!
To all my UCU comrades: I hope we’ll continue to bump into each other, wherever in the world we happen to be. Anne, it’s a loss for the Hard Problems of consciousness, which I always figured you were going to solve, but personally I’m glad we’ve ended up (once again, after so many joint UC classes) studying similar things. Max & Jasmijn, I expect great things from a biotech/data science power couple like yourselves, and I hope to be able to pay you a visit in the Bay Area one day.
You are the Leslie Knope to my Ben Wyatt. I love you and I like you..
