3. The 36th Annual Conference of the American Occupational Therapy Association was held in Houston, Texas on November 13-20, 1953.

4. The Fifth Annual Western International Conference of Occupational and Physical Therapists was held in Vancouver, B.C., on May 30-31, 1953. The theme of the conference was “Progress Together”.

5. At the general membership meeting in November, there was a general discussion on the issue of licensure. No action was taken by the group at this time.

6. Grace Black developed a membership roster as a personal project.

7. OTAO contacted the Physical Therapy and Nursing Associations to learn how tofind out about bills that were pertinent to our association in the State Legislature.

8. Fund Raising project suggested by Clara Brainard Smithhisler: Sell raffle tickets on a large doll that the therapists have made a layette for. The tickets were to sell fortwenty-five cents each and each therapist was to sell forty tickets. The “Baby Doll” was raffled off in December and won by a volunteer at the Portland Rehabilitation Center who had a five year old girl.

1. There were eighteen working Occupational Therapists and seven “at home” therapists in 1954.

3. The following motion was made at the March 5, 1954 membership meeting: Grace Black made a motion that was

2. The 7th annual Western International Conference of Occupational and Physical Therapy was held in British Columbia.

1. OTAO is the largest that it has ever been with twentyfive active members and five associate members. The aim of the association during this year is to make the meetings as constructive as possible. Jan Beelan, OTR, starts the occupational therapy department at Holladay Center.

2. The 8th Annual Western International Conference of Occupational and Physical Therapists is held in Portland at the Masonic Temple (May 19 and 20). The theme for the conference is “Pain”. Articles on occupational therapy appear in RN (nursing journal and McCalls Needlework.)

4. A Rehabilitation Institute was offered by the University of Oregon in cooperation with the Oregon Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and Oregon Tuberculosis and Health Association (July 29 – August 10, 1956). The purpose of the institute was to provide a basic training to representatives from the various communities that will lead to better integration and teamwork in serving the handicapped throughout the state.

1. Non working occupational therapists sponsored a cookie and cookie dough sale at the monthly meetings; Christmas card sale; A complete layette was designed and made for a doll that was raffled off at the December meeting.

1. Governor Robert Holmes designated a committee for the Study of the Problems of the Aged. Robert Miller, OTR, was appointed to that committee.

2. The annual conference of the American Occupational Therapy Association was held in Cleveland, Ohio on October 21-25. This conference was called the Institute Conference. One of the issues addressed by the national association at this conference was that there was a need to determine the boundaries between occupational therapy and physical therapy.

3. The 9th Western International Conference of Occupational and Physical Therapy was held in Vancouver, B.C., May 11-12. The theme of the conference was “Changing Concepts in Occupational and Physical Therapy”.

4. An Institute for occupational therapists sponsored by the American Hospital Association was cancelled for lack of support. The Institute was to be held in Seattle. The theme was “Organization and Administration”.

1. Marjorie Fish, OTR, Executive Director of the American Occupational Therapy Association visited the Oregon therapists.

2. The forty-first annual conference of the American Occupational Therapy Association was held in New York City. It was announced that there are 4,602 members of the association.

3. The 10th annual Western International Conference of Occupational and Physical Therapy was held May 17-18, 1958.

1. Thefirst revision of the constitution of the association since it was founded in 1947 was completed. A vote of thanks was given to Grace Black for her work on this task.

2. Sister Jean Marie, R.N., OTR, started an occupational therapy department at Sacred Heart General Hospital in Eugene, Oregon.

4. Irene Hollis, OTR, visited the occupational therapy departments in Oregon during the month of March. She was the field consultant in rehabilitation for the American Occupational Therapy Association.

5. The 11th annual Western International Conference of Occupational and Physical Therapy was held in Seattle on May 2, 1959. The theme of the conference was “Geriatrics”.
