Esoterror Defector

This profile is a conclusions precis from the Signals Intelligence Analysis branch. Work product available on a need-to-know basis. Except where otherwise noted, all code names in this document are OV-assigned, as per protocol DP11-A.

Three months ago, a routine communications intercept from a source putatively originating in Karlsbad, Sweden was identified by ETS as a voice call from Esoterror leader PRECEDENT to otherwise unknown Esoterror asset, hereby codenamed LIMNER. Relevant passage of intercept as follows:

and low impulse control, than the population at large.

We have found that many low-level Esoterror assets own Yanagi prints and merchandise. Possession of these items likely serves as a receptivity signal to recruiters. Known Esoterror recruiters Menon Roco, Andrea Pieper, and Marius Beuran have all been observed at Yanagi art openings. This open activity may be curtailed after an OV extraction team used the occasion of a Yanagi opening in Bucharest to apprehend Beuran.

In August of last year, Yanagi was briefly taken hostage at Daike’s offices by a fanatic admirer who claimed that she’s stolen imagery from his dreams. A police standoff ended when the hostage-taker, after lengthy discussions with Yanagi, surrendered himself to Tokyo police. Shortly thereafter, he died in police custody. An autopsy revealed that his lower intestines had disintegrated.

Mitkowski’s civilian home base was Toronto, so unauthorized contact may have occurred between missions. Investigation of Mitkowski’s activities during 2006 and 2007 may lead to information on Anthropologist, or put team in position to make contact, if he is indeed hoping to defect.

We have yet to conclusively identify the Anthropologist. Our best possibility is Duncan Chang (b. May 5, 1965, Flint, Michigan) adjunct professor of Sociology at the University of Toledo in Ohio. Chang was reported as a missing person by his father, Kam-Yuen Chang, at about the same time as the communications intercepts above. He lived in a apartment in the city of Toledo and maintained a modest lake house in Dellroy, OH, about three hours away.

Chang keeps a low Internet profile. His brief biography on the University of Toledo site lists his specialties as Urban Studies, Economic Studies, and the Sociology of Deviance. His few published papers examine from different angles the connections between economic inequality and social deviance. His most salient paper was the last he published before a long dry period. It posited that one could increase the level of social deviance in a subculture by causing its members to believe themselves to be economically disadvantaged compared to society at large. This thesis may have attracted the attention of Esoterror recruiters. A statistics analysis team has determined that minor sexual offenses, including indecent exposure and public lewdness, have increased by 27% in the Toledo area since last year. This may be coincidence, or could be the result of an Esoterror psychosocial subversion operation spearheaded by Chang.

Another possible correlation: rise of an urban legend in disadvantaged Toledo neighborhoods about “the straph”, a sexually transmissible disease which causes one to speak in tongues, see ghosts, and hear colors.

Suggest field interviews with friends, family and colleagues to develop new leads on Chang and his

PRECEDENT: Likely. Not sure. Neutralize him.

Scouring the intercept database, we recovered another communication made two days later, between PRECEDENT and another unidentified Esoterror leader, codenamed CRATER.

PRECEDENT: Failure on the Anthropologist front.

CRATER: I told you to--

PRECEDENT: I put a top hitter on it, but Anthropologist was tipped. Laptop, toiletries, basic clothing were gone from his cottage. Another team is sitting on his city apartment but nothing so far.

CRATER: You should never have let him handle the cube.

PRECEDENT: At least now the epiphany effect is proven.

CRATER: Small consolation. He’ll go plugger now for certain.

PRECEDENT: That’s what I’m hoping. CRATER: Elucidate.

PRECEDENT: If he goes to ground, we won’t find him. Seeking out a plugger cell means sticking his neck out. When he does, we cap him. Bag a plugger team in the bargain.

CRATER: Where will he try the approach? PRECEDENT: He might try Toronto. He met

the blond there. Or New Delhi.

The reference to “the blond” in Toronto is perhaps to Janice Mitkowski (1981-2007), an OV

heresies. They denied the authority of the Vatican, refused vernacular mass, and eschewed priestly celibacy.

Gemma’s mother suffered from what may have been undiagnosed post-partum depression. When she began to report encounters of ethereal, watchful entities, Jonathan dismissed these as hallucinations tied to her fragile mental state. When Gemma was two, Jane Courtland slit her wrists. During this time he discovered the Esoterror conspiracy, adding it to his enemies list. Deeming Courtland too unstable for OV recruitment, a veil-out team attempted psychological reconditioning. This process failed to overcome his emotional barriers.

If Chang has defected, we want to recruit him as a voluntary informant, removing to a secure facility. (Naturally precautions must be taken to prevent Chang from learning location of facility or identity of agents, should he prove to be a double. Full medical examination must be conducted to ensure that he does not carry exo-parasites or exhibit possession symptoms.) Mild coercive measures are authorized to persuade Chang to cooperate, as are promises of financial reward. Take maximum precautions to ensure that contact team is not under surveillance by Esoterror assassins. As alluded to above, they will seek deaths of both Chang (if he is in fact the Anthropologist) and the investigative team.
