CAPÍTULO 3: DESCRIPCIÓN DEL SISTEMA
1. Modelo del negocio
1.4. Listado de casos de uso del negocio expandidos
This study has a few limitations that must be considered. The sample size is a limitation. The small sample size reduces power and, therefore, might impact on the obtained p values (i.e., increase the probability of making a type-II error).
Furthermore, small sample sizes might decrease the generalisability of the study because sample-specific characteristics could impact on the results. This being as the small sample size was not representative of the South African population, in which results may not directly be applicable for all individual’s in the South African work environment. It is therefore recommended that the results be interpreted with caution and that replication studies are conducted. Another limitation and avenue for future research is that general factor variance and unique variance were not separated when investigating the relationship between the facets and burnout. It is possible that a more complete understanding of the relationship between personality facets and burnout could be obtained by separating these two sources of variance. A bifactor analysis (Jenrich & Bentler, 2011) is well suited to this type of analysis and might provide greater insight into how the unique variance of the personality facets are related to burnout. Lastly, a limitation may be that the multiple regression and correlation was performed using observed scores. Using these techniques does not invalidate the results, but there might be merit in using statistical techniques such as structural equation modelling that corrects for measurement error when examining relationships because measurement error might attenuate relationships.
63 5.8 Conclusion
This study set out to investigate the relationship between the broad five-factor personality traits and the more specific facets and burnout among working adults in South Africa.
This study is one of the few to investigate the facet level in relation to burnout. The results indicate that there is merit in investigating the relationships of the facets of each of the five factors with burnout, in order to gain a greater understanding of how personality contributes to the overall experience of being burnt out. However, the five factors can also be used to provide information about this relationship. What is similar in this study compared to other literature is that as a whole, these results suggest that individuals that score high on Neuroticism and Openness to Experience and low on Conscientiousness are more likely to experience burnout. However, what was unexpected from the results is that, Extraversion had no relation to burnout. Interestingly though, at the facet level, positive affectivity appeared to have a negative relationship with emotional exhaustion and excitement-seeking had a positive relationship with emotional exhaustion. These unexpected yet valuable results indicate that there is merit in further investigating the relationship between burnout and personality at the facet level to better understand the burnout-personality relationship. Overall, this study makes a valuable contribution to future research by identifying the importance and the role of facets within the five-factor model when examining the relationship between personality and external variables such as burnout.
