Healthy Eating
One of the 0
biggest
problems facing doctors today is the fact that people are eating too 1 food.
Many people in developed societies are overweight and 2 because
they never get any exercise. It’s a good idea to be aware of what you put into your mouth from a very early age. Healthy eating is important if you want to live a
3 life. The first step to a 4 diet is to think about
water and exercise as types of food. If we don’t drink enough water 5
clear out the waste products, we can suffer from tiredness, headaches and low
6 . And we need to exercise
to use up all the energy we are storing by eating our food.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are the basis of any healthy diet because they have very few calories, but are full of
7 and minerals. The most
colourful fruit and vegetables often have the highest levels of important nutrients. Green vegetables, for example, are full of calcium (also found in 8
products), magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc and vitamins A, C, E and K. We also need carbohydrates to provide us with energy. The best sources are beans, fruit, vegetables and whole grains, but try to avoid white
9 , refined sugar and white
rice, which are not good for you. We also need to eat fats and there are some good and some bad fats. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids found in fish like salmon, herring, mackerel and sardines are very good for our 10 and brains.

A boy I like has invited me to a party at his house, but I don’t want to go because I don’t like his friends. How can I say no without upsetting him?
1
I’m really upset because my girlfriend has agreed to go to the school party with my best friend. I don’t understand why she has done that. We’ve been going out for two weeks.
2
My best friend told me yesterday she doesn’t want to be my friend any more because I don’t wear fashionable clothes. I’m really upset. What should I do?
3
I’m furious because my parents won’t let me go out with my friends in the school week. My friends’ parents let them go. What right do my parents have to make me stay at home?
4
There’s a boy in our class who’s always noisy and disturbs the lessons. He took my book and copied my homework the other day. He’s done that to other students too.
5
I found a lot of money in my sister’s bedroom when I was helping her clean in there. She was very angry when I asked her where she got it. I’m worried that she could be stealing it from our parents. She told me not to tell them about it.
A Is she really a friend if she’s only interested in
how you look? She can’t be a very good friend.
B He’s obviously got some problems if he is
acting in this way. Talk to your teacher about how it’s affecting all of you and see if he can find a solution.
C This is a difficult one. Perhaps she’s saving for
a special present for them. She could have a weekend job. Try talking to her again.
D You haven’t been together very long. Maybe
she thinks you’re just friends. Try talking to her.
E They’re only worried about you and want to
keep you safe and make sure you do well at school. You should respect their decision.
F I don’t like telling lies, but maybe just say
you’ve got a family party that evening and can’t go.
