2.2. MARCO TEORICO

2.2.7. MANEJO DEL PARTO PRETÉRMINO

A num ber of references w ere m ade in the thesis to the Deep Ecology Platform . As it is not very long, and will be unfam iliar to m ost readers outside the Deep Ecology m ovem ent, it is included in its entirety. The Deep Ecology Platform was first created by Naess in the early 1980s, and has been revised a few times since then. The version quoted below w as w ritten in 1995, and w as kindly given to me by D avid C adm an. In an 1986 essay discussing the platform, N aess lam ents that it is identified by that term , as he feels it m ight be better understood if it were called " A set of fairly general and abstract statem ents that seem to be accepted by nearly all su p p o rters of the Deep Ecology m ovem ent" (Naess, 1995, 214). But this is not a catchy enough title, so it remains a 'platform '.

(1) The flourishing of hum an and non-hum an life on Earth has intrinsic value. The usefulness of non-human life forms is independent of the usefulness these may have for narrow human purposes.

(2) Richness and diversity of life forms are values in them selves and contribute to the flourishing of human and non-human life on Earth.

(3) H um ans have no right to reduce this richness and diversity except to satisfy vital needs.

(4) Present human interference w ith the non-human world is excessive, and the situation is rapidly worsening.

(5) The flourishing of human life and cultures is compatible with a substantial decrease in hum an populations. The flourishing of non-human life requires such a decrease.

(6) Significant change of life conditions for the better requires change in policies. These affect basic economic, technological, and ideological structures.

(7) The ideological change is m ainly appreciating life quality (d w ellin g in situations of intrinsic value) rather than adhering to a high standard of living. There w ill be a profound awareness of the difference between big and great.

(8) Those w ho subscribe to the foregoing points have an obligation directly or indirectly to participate in the attem pt to im p lem en t the necessary ch an ges p ea cefu lly and dem ocratically.
