After being part of the VELUX EHF Champions League in the past five consecutive seasons, Chambery Savoie Handball now face new international challenges in their first appearance in the EHF Cup since 2007.

Finishing fourth in the French league they secured the ticket in the EHF Cup. In the Qualification Round 2 they eliminated Turkey’s Ankara and in the last knockout round they sailed past Austrian champions Alpla Hard to the top 16 of the competition besides two other French teams Nantes and Montpellier.

Despite strong opponents like EHF Cup Finals hosts Füchse Berlin, Romanian champions HCM Constanta and group stage debutants Hlohovec from Slovakia, the hopes in the French Alps are high that the Group Phase is not the final stage for the team including three Gille brothers (Bertrande, Guillaume and Benjamin).

It is the clear objective of the club management to at least win one trophy this season – regardless if it is on domestic or on international court.

Manager Laurent Munier mainly focuses on their home matches in terms of proceeding to the quarter-finals.

“The favourite of this competition, Berlin, is in our group and there is Constanta, a young team, but with a rich experience in European Cup competitions. Our goal is to win all our home games and to try to win in Slovakia and in Romania to be sure to finish second and in overall to be one of the best two second ranked teams to proceed to the quarter-finals,” Munier says.

Mario Cavalli coach

Only Barcelona’s Xavi Pascual and Montpellier’s Patrice Canayer can look back upon such a long period in the same club as Chambery coach Mario Cavalli. Born in Chambery, he joined the club as a player in 1976, before becoming part of the coaching team. After eleven years as an assistant of Philippe Gardent (now at Paris Handball) the 49-year-old Cavalli has been the coach in charge for two seasons now, with a certain success so far. Never shouting, but always a very persuasive man, he’s been keen to bring new players to the roster, especially young ones from the club’s training centre. Some say he can turn young players to key factors, like he did with Timothey Nguessan last year. His biggest success until now was becoming French champions in 2001, but surprising results from European competitions in the past, like defeating Barcelona, Kiel or Rhein-Neckar Löwen can be also remembered.

Bertrand Gille line player

After ten highly successful years at HSV Hamburg Bertrand Gille returned to the club at which his handball career started. In the meantime the line player and former World Handball Player of the Year became double Olympic champion (2008, 2012), three-time world (2001, 2009, 2011) champion and double European champion (2006, 2010). Back in Chambery, Gille has had a tough last season, often injured and missing lots of games.

Absent from this year’s European Championship due to a foot injury, he’s back in full form and shall guarantee a stable defence and goals from the six metre line. His absence partly meant Chambéry nearly got thrown out of the competition during the playoffs, but now Bertrand Gille has got the ambition to win the EHF Cup, a trophy he’s never touched in the past.

Cyril Dumoulin goalkeeper

The 30-year-old goalkeeper has played in Chambéry since he was 16. A kid of the club, he’s made every step there and played his first French league match aged 19. A solid team player, capable of beautiful saves against the best teams in the world. He’s been a key factor in the past Chambéry wins against the likes of Kielce and Barcelona. Now the kid’s grown up, and his performances at the EHF European Championships are there to prove it. In the absence of Thierry Omeyer, he played some excellent matches, and also made a good appearance during the final against Denmark.

Having suffered from a tough beginning of the season, his newly gained confidence should help Chambéry through a hard group in the EHF Cup.

But Cyril Dumoulin also has a lot of other abilities. He’s an author, writing books about handball and his inside views of the matches.

Edin Basic centre back

Born in Bosnia 34 years ago, Edin Basic travelled a lot before finally landing in Chambéry. The centre back first played for eight seasons in Zurich, winning two Swiss championships, before signing for Chambéry in December 2009. This is the club with which he discovered the EHF Champions League, playing it for five seasons in a row. For the first time this year, he will discover the EHF Cup.

Edin Basic has a prominent role in the Chambéry team as their best scorer, a real presence in the changing room, but also the man who makes the life easier on the court thanks to his magic passes, one of the reasons he has been awarded as the best centre back in the French league for three seasons in a row.

European competitions have always been kind to Chambéry, with memorable victories over favourites like Barcelona, Rhein-Neckar Löwenand Kielce in the past seasons. Edin Basic hopes that he will be able to repeat such performances this year.
