Description of Content

The two-year course lasts four semesters and is divided in core and specialization modules. The first semester consists of five core mod- ules with Natural Environment, Human Envi- ronment, Environmental Economics, Interna- tional Development and Project Management. In the second and the third semester, students can choose eight from the following topics:

– Water Resources Management Principles – Hydrology and Water Quality

– Water Policy and Legislation – Watershed Management

– Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal – Land Use and Water Resources

– Water Resources Management/Tools and Instruments

– Water System Analysis

– Special Topics in Water Resources Manage- ment

The fourth semester is mainly focused on the master thesis with field research, thesis writ- ing and colloquium.

Forms of Assessment

Forms of assessment vary from written or oral exams to presentations and group work. The programme represents about 20 credit hours (30 ECTS credit points) in the first three semesters.

Study Abroad Unit

The ITT supports study abroad by recognising the modules of other universities. Particularly good opportunities to study abroad are of- fered at our partner universities in Brazil, Chile, Jordan, Mexico and Vietnam.

The institute also aims to enable all students to travel to a country in the tropics or subtrop- ics for their Master’s thesis, for a period of three to six months.

Course Objectives

The overall goal of this Master’s course is to equip students with a wide range of knowl- edge and practical skills related to water sys- tem analysis, water management and water resources planning in the tropics and subtrop- ics. Furthermore, the course offers opportuni- ties to develop your career and to bring your skills and experiences to the forefront.

Enrolment Fees

Approx. 230 EUR per semester

The fees include a semester ticket covering public transport in the Cologne metropolitan area.

Costs of Living

Approx. 750 – 800 EUR per month

Job Opportunities

As classes take place in the evening, students have the opportunity to work or do intern- ships during the day.

Language Requirements

Certified proficiency in English:

– TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Lan- guage, USA) of at least 500

(Computerized version: 173, internet based version: 61)

– IELTS (International English Language Test- ing System, UK), level 5.0

or comparable English Test.

Academic Admission Requirements

For admission to the Master’s programme »Technology and Resource Management in the Tropics and Subtropics« (TERMA - Vi- etnam), the applicant is required to have successfully completed studies in the field of engineering or natural science (at least Bachelor’s or comparable degree). The follow- ing branches of study are eligible: engineering science, natural sciences, architecture, agri- culture science, life science, earth science, and informatics.

The following application documents are required:

- completed and signed application form in English

- document proving the higher education entrance qualification – Copy of the origi- nal document and English translation - higher education graduation certificate

plus academic record – Copy of the origi- nal document and English translation - explanations of the higher institutions

grading system

- curriculum vitae (in tabular form) in Eng- lish

- proof of English proficiency (TOEFL 500 points, IELTS band 5.0 or equivalent test). If an applicant’s first language is English or his/her studies at the university level haven been conducted wholly in the medium of English (written proof from the University is required) he/she is exempted from providing an English language profi- ciency test

– a letter of motivation explaining why he/ she would like to study in the program (1 page) in English

– formulated project idea on what he/she would be interested to work on during the master thesis (2 pages) in English

Arrival Support

Scholarship holders are picked up at the Co- logne Bonn Airport by the ITT staffs.

Services and Support

Tutoring, counselling, language courses (Ger- man), practical training, excursions, work- shops, personal support from teaching assist- ants and professors, international network for former students, etc.

A field research trip (three to five months) forms part of the course.

Internships

Internships are supported in development cooperation institutions and private sector companies.
