Poem ‘Ode to the Professionals’

A poem which was written by Members of Bedford Wednesday Club affiliated to Sight Concern Bedfordshire was read out by JoH. The group wrote this poem instead of an article for an NHS Bedfordshire publication. A copy of the poem is attached.

Club (via AH) Service users expressed an interest in learning to read Braille, they thought that it was a statutory requirement that people who are

registered Blind be provided with lessons

JS to investigate 20/05/10 JS advised that this should be included as part of the assessment of the service user. The Visual Impairment Team manager advised that the use of Braille and subsequently the demand for lessons have decreased over past few years. Lessons are currently not available locally. JS to speak to service users regarding their experience and see if resolution can be found.

AH) Treacherous winter caused major problems for

vulnerable adults, Council should ensure that people are not stuck in their homes due to dangerous/icy footpaths. Some isolated people stuck in their homes unable to get out to their local shops.

Arrangements/plans should put in place now ready for next winter

Agreed that more discussions required in the future (could be part of the building of social capital which is being discussed at Transformation Board) GH to discuss possibilities of extending the village care schemes with BRCC.
