Ben has had a successful year and has got good marks in most of his exams. He always does best in science subjects, but this year he has really improved in languages, and he has got much higher marks in French in particular. He still needs to work hard at history and geography. He should revise a bit more before the exams.

Although he is quite reserved and is often quiet in class, Ben has made a lot of friends this year. He has also been very kind to other students. An older boy was bullying Ben’s friend and Ben confronted the bully and told the teacher. The bullying has now stopped and the school has written a polite letter to the bully’s parents.

Ben has got a very good attitude. He helped another student who was cheating. The student wanted to copy Ben’s chemistry homework. Ben refused to give him his homework, but he spent two evenings with the boy and they revised the subject together.

I think Ben should think about becoming a teacher! He’s very tolerant and sensitive to other people. Ben should visit a few universities next term to decide which he likes best.

SHARBAT GULA

Sharbat is famous because she appeared on the cover of National Geographic magazine, and the world was amazed by her beautiful green eyes.

She was photographed in 1985 at the age of thirteen by journalist Steve McCurry. She lived in Afghanistan and was forced to leave her home in Afghanistan during the war with Russia. For seventeen years nobody knew her name and she was known simply as ‘the Afghan Girl’. For many people she symbolized the war.

The journalist tried to find her during the 90s, but he couldn’t. In 2002 a team from National

Geographic looked for her. A few women said they were Sharbat and a few men said they were her husband! They finally found her. Her identity was confirmed using modern technology which matched her eyes to the photo.

Sharbat didn’t know that she was famous. She was photographed again and her story was written and published in the April 2002 magazine.

Modern pictures of her were printed and a television documentary was made.

Today her life is quite normal. She gets up before sunrise and collects water from the stream. She cooks, cleans, does the washing and looks after her three children.
