Admission Requirements

Applicants to this program must complete the application procedure, present official documentation of a high school diploma, in accordance with State Board policy, GED, or college transcripts, if applicable, and meet the following minimum admission standards for the practical nursing program:

1. Unconditional admission to the college

2. Receipt of completed application for the practical nursing program by the date published on www.rstc.edu website

3. A minimum of 2.50 average GPA on the last 24 credit hours of college coursework for students with previous college work 4. Hours are considered in reverse chronological order

5. A minimum of 2.50 high school cumulative GPA for students without prior college work (GED acceptable in lieu of high school transcript)

Eligibility for English 101 and Math 116 as determined by college policy:

1. COMPASS writing score of 62

2. COMPASS math (pre-algebra) score of 36 3. Good standing with the College

4. Meeting the essential functions or technical standards required for nursing

5. A score of 76 or higher on the COMPASS Reading Examination (or related ACT Reading Score of 17 or higher)

The TEAS (The Test of Essential Academic Skills) testing will be done on all nursing applicants. The cost of the test will be

$50.00 (plus tax) and will be the responsibility of the student. Completion of the TEAS test must have been completed prior to admission to the Nursing Program.

The actual score made by the student will be calculated into the compilation of points. The total number of points possible on the TEAS is 150

The TEAS score is good for three (3) years. A student may repeat the TEAS V (or current version) once during any semester admission time frame. The student must wait at least six (6) weeks between taking each test. A student’s score on a previous version of the TEAS test may be considered at the discretion of each college if it is within the three year time frame

Admission to the practical nursing program is competitive, and the number of students is limited by the number of faculty and clinical facilities available. Meeting minimal requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

TEAS Testing

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a multiple-choice assessment of basic academic knowledge in reading, mathematics, science, English and language usage. The objectives assessed on the TEAS are those which nurse educators deemed most appropriate and relevant to measure entry level skills and abilities of nursing program applicants. Candidates wishing to take the TEAS test must be a student of Reid State Technical College and have taken and made the cut score to the eligible for the Practical Nursing Program or be exempt from the COMPASS test. There is a fee of $50.00 (plus tax) – students will need to make arrangements to pay for the test when they register online at www.atitesting.com. Registration fees are non-refundable. Students must arrive 15 minutes before the test begins. Testing time is up to 3.5 hours. Students who arrive late will not be allowed to start the test. If you are late, you will have to reschedule online and pay the fee again. Before being admitted into the testing center you must present a valid photo ID, and your ATI username and password.

Other Admission Factors

A GPA of 2.5 will be required for both PN and ADN admission.

Students with college courses should have the last 24 hours of college credit calculated for their GPAs. There will be no time limit for previously taken courses such as Anatomy, Physiology, Math, or English.

The eleven (11) optional points for admissions will remain in effect and can be awarded at the discretion of each college.

Colleges that have implemented MTH100 may continue to use this as a Math requirement.

Students may be awarded up to 11 points as determined by individual college policy and procedures

The applicant’s score from the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) can be rated up to a maximum of 150 points. The TEAS test must have been taken within 3 years for consideration. The applicant’s actual score on the test will be the points awarded.

Receipt of completed application for the Associate Degree Nursing Program by the date published on www.rstc.edu website A minimum of 2.50 cumulative GPA for students with previous college work

A minimum of 2.50 high school GPA for students without prior college work (GED acceptable in lieu of high school transcript) Eligibility for:

English101 and Math116 as determined by college policy, and BIO201 during the first term of nursing courses. (As a prerequisite to BIO201, student must successfully complete BIO103 or achieve a passing score on the ACS approved placement exam)

Placement Testing TEAS Test

All students entering Reid State Technical College are required to take the COMPASS placement test prior to registration if enrolling in more than 4 credit hours or 8 weekly contact hours. The Assessment Test is used to determine a student’s knowledge in math, reading, and language. Students scoring below specified levels in each test will be required to enroll in developmental courses before enrolling in college-level Math or English classes.

Students who wish to challenge placement results may re-test one time only within a three-year period. Students choosing to take the COMPASS a second time are charged a fee.

Students with scores equal to or above the cut-off scores may register for curriculum requirements. Students scoring below must register for developmental courses. No student may take college-level English or Math unless they have taken the COMPASS test.

All students are required to take requisite developmental classes during their first semester prior to entering the sequence of coursework in their chosen programs.

Testing Accommodations

Students with proven physical, emotional, and learning disabilities may request accommodations by contacting the ADA representative prior to testing. These services are available at no additional charge but documentation is required. Students are encouraged to take the test once with no additional aid.

Students with approved documented disabilities have the ability to work with the ADA representative to arrange accommodations which include oral administration, large print, Braille version, individual or separate room administration, and multiple test sessions.
