TAPESCRIPTMark: You know, it makes me so angry to see how dirty and polluted our town is now. People drop litter everywhere in the streets, especially the tourists. The traffic is much worse than ten years ago, and I hate cycling now because it’s so dangerous. You can’t breathe because the car fumes are so bad.
Sarah: I know what you mean, but think about the world in general. It’s not just our town that is dying ... look at the rainforests. Why do they cut so many trees down? Mark: Well, they need more land to grow more
food, not only for humans but for animals as well. But I think we should do
something for our local environment first. Fewer cars would be great, wouldn’t it? I think more people should use public transport and leave their cars at home. Sarah: I agree, but I’m more worried about global
pollution and global temperatures. Look how hot the summers are now and the winters are much warmer too. You realise that this increase in temperatures is causing the ice at the poles to melt and soon coastal cities will be flooded. I just don’t want to think about it.
Mark: Why don’t we join our local ‘green’ group and then we can start a campaign to clean up the town and then we can go global! Sarah: Good idea! Let’s go to the library now. 1 M 2 M 3 S 4 M 5 S 6 F 7 T 8 T 9 F 10 F

Interviewer: Thank you very much for agreeing to this interview. I know that you are very busy promoting your new film at the moment.
Film star: It’s a pleasure to be here. Interviewer: Your first film, Dreams of Love,
made you very famous while you were still very young. How did that fame change your life?
Film star: Well ... at first I loved it. Everywhere I went, people wanted to talk to me, to take my photo, to have an autograph, and I enjoyed meeting my fans. But after a while, I realised that I didn’t have a private life any more. I always had to look good, to go out looking my best. I couldn’t go to the supermarket on my own in jeans and a sweatshirt because my fans expected me to look like a film star!
Interviewer: So what did you do? Film star: First of all, I started going
everywhere by car. I didn’t walk down the streets like I did before I was famous and I moved to a villa in the country, away from the journalists and paparazzi. Of course, I still gave interviews but I was much more careful about the people I spoke to.
Interviewer: But there must be some good things about being beautiful and famous! Film star: You’re very kind! Of course there
are. I’m very lucky to have a wonderful home and I was able to buy a house for my parents. They have never had much money so I was very happy to help them. But I don’t live like a star. I don’t go to parties much. I prefer to be at home with my husband and our two children.
Interviewer: Thank you very much for talking to me and good luck with your next film, Dancing with Tigers. Film star: Thank you.

A My home is in a small village. It’s the typical picture most people have of the English countryside. There are roses in the garden and the house has a thatched roof. Inside
it’s quite dark because the windows are very small. The ceilings are low too, so in the winter it feels very cosy.
B My home is very small but I like it because I can move around when I want to. I don’t like staying in the same place for very long so this is perfect. Sometimes I would like to have more space because I don’t have enough room for all my books. In the winter it can be very cold as well because the heating isn’t good enough. C My home is on the twentieth floor. I have
fantastic views over the whole of London. It’s small but very light as the windows are very big. In the summer it gets too hot because it’s so high up, but I love it – though I know most people think I’m crazy to live in the centre of town.
D My home is on one floor, which is very important for me because I can’t walk up and down stairs easily. My sitting room is the biggest room and has doors which open on to the garden at the back. In the summer I love sitting outside in the garden with a nice cup of tea! E My home is fantastic for the children. They can
make as much noise as they like because we don’t have any immediate neighbours. We have a lot of space and the house is always full of people. It would be impossible if we lived in a terraced house! 1 D 2 A 3 E 4 C 5 B 6 F 7 T 8 T 9 T 10 F

TAPESCRIPTPaul: Hi, Mary, it’s great to see you again. How are you? What’s been happening recently? We haven’t seen each other for such a long time.
Mary: Paul, good to see you too. Well, to be honest, things aren’t great. They say bad things always come in threes. Well, I guess it’s true!
Paul: Why? What’s happened?
Mary: Where do I start! Last Tuesday my car was stolen, so I had to go to work by train. If I hadn’t had to take the train, I wouldn’t have been late. Of course, I missed an important meeting. If I hadn’t left my mobile phone at home, I would have been able to call the office and tell my boss. Of course, he didn’t know what had
happened so when I walked in he was really angry. In fact he was so angry that he told me to leave and never come back. Paul: That’s terrible! How could he do that?
It wasn’t your fault.
Mary: Yes, but ... anyway ... I was so upset I left my bag on the train going home. If I hadn’t done that, I would have spent a lot of money, so maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
Paul: It sounds pretty bad to me!
Mary: Well, things can only get better, can’t they?!
Paul: True. Come on, let me buy you a drink. Mary: Good idea.
